What was the land round there used for? I remember dumper trucks (1980 ish) travelling along there from the works.
As a part time industrial archaeologist(since saunders arrived) to fill the bad days, I took a walk a few months ago and there were some brick building remains. I thonk passenger traffic stopped around 1957 ish on the central line too. There's practically no reminders apart from all the bridges from there back to Sainsburys.

I cannot remember any buildings on the GC line around that bridge

the signal box at the end of the up line platform at the old New Whittington station was the only building left there

the platforms themselves were removed when the inter city express trains started using the line when the traffic was diverted from the

main line onto the freight line

I also walk a lot down there now and sometimes never see any traffic on the freight line

A far cry from the days when you could hear the bells in the signal box clanging every few minutes with trains on the line and also

going into barrow hill sheds just passed the end of the platform

Trains also joined the freight line there from one of the colleries in the area. That line ran passed the bottom of Staveley Chemicals under Hall Lane and in fact up to a few months ago the lines were still present

There were 3 pits within the staveley works boundary. The Dowell, Seymour and Campbell galleries. The Dowell Colliery caught fire and the Chesterfield canal was diverted down the shaft to extinguish the fire.

Check this OS of area - 1895

Took everything apart from all 50PS. Had to walk home as I didn't get paid and had no money

Yes probably local knowledge for that raid.

They even took out the post at the top of cow lane in brimington

Was anyone caught and charged for the raid?

Thinking back it was late 70s or early 80s

Thought no one was caught and as I worked in a wages department at the time we certainly stepped up our security on wages days

particularly when the two weeks summer holiday wages were paid

As I recall the wages department at Staveley Works was open to the main road making it easier for the gang to get in and out quickly

Rumour at the time I think said it was a London gang tipped off by local knowledge

Hollingwood was the first village on England to have hot, running water and many of the pipes are still visible around the village even if the boiler site isn't!

I didn't know that, as I was told by granddad that Speedwell Terraces in Staveley was the first place to have hot running water, being supplied by Ireland Pit.

Not sure if anybody has seen this site, but for those interested in old photos taken from the air in the 1920s & 30s, might find this interesting - just type in the place you're interested in

Served my apprenticeship at Stanton and Staveley works. Worked there for 6 years until the bitch told us to f*** off. Went to Ireland Colliery and she told us there to f*** off also. Not all bad though. She's now dead. Painlessly I know, but you can't have everything in life you want.
The Hollingwood hub is built onto the lock house. There used to be three massive pumps in there to supply the Foundry with cooling water from the canal. Stripped them down many times to remove blockages of tadpoles and fish. I worked on the boilers that supplied Hollingwood with all it's hot water, the gas engines that supplied gas and the generators that supplied its electricity. Hollingwood was total self sufficient and not actively connected to any national grids with the exception of cold water and sewerage.

May find the pub you mentioned on this aerial view of Canal/Staveley from 1928!
