I thought all the Elm Tree pubs had closed anyhow - something to do with Dutch Elm disease.

I first went to the Elm Tree at Elmton (why am I thinking of a place called Whaley Thorns - is that near there?) on the way back from an evening's entertainment at the "King of Diamonds" public house in Shirebrook.

My brother took me there. I was only a teenager at the time and I think he wanted to expose me to a bit of "kulcha".

Whaley Thorn is the next village over. I go past the Elm Tree times a week when I go to aqua fit at Creswell, always think it'd be nice to get my father in law to take the rest of the family there for around 5 on a Sunday, for after aqua fit, but our budget is more the Young Vanish at Glappy than the Elm Tree Posted Image

Last night's takeaway from Indian Blues was superb. Lamb Dhinajpuri. Eat one of those and tell me you don't like it.

The last time I had a take away from there Craig they didn't. I would be interested to know if they have started a delivery service because I would certainly use it.

Ok mate thanks. Just ordered from kaash - I wouldn't have minded picking up a takeaway from Indian blues but I've had a few drinks so I'll have to try another time.

They don't deliver. Not due to a lack of demand - I suggest they don't need or want to go down that route. The takeaway prices are so good that it's still cheaper for me do a 3 mile round trip to collect than to have one delivered by the next best option (Westbars Tandoori). The only downside is that you need to have it early on before you've cracked the beers open!

The owner is a mate of mine, in fact I was talking to him this afternoon. He is absolutely run off his feet, ha has spoken to me about larger premises but fears quality could be affected if he went too large.

He is extremely dedicated to his trade and very proud of what he produces. I love going there..

Double edged sword I guess mark!

I think I'll give it a try next time I have a takeaway.

I'm a fan of both of them. Indian Blues edge it for balancing taste with spiciness. West Bars are good if you don't mind your curry a little hotter. I've had a few Madras's from there which are closer to Vindaloo strength. I'm usually ok after the first mouthful.

Agree. I really miss the Druid at Birchover. It's still there of course - but when the previous owner, Mr Bunce, left they tried to turn it into a bit of Kensington or Chelsea in the Derbyshire hills - and it doesn't work.

You used to walk into that pub and be greeted by a roaring fire and floor to ceiling menu on blackboards with all the different dishes. I've still never seen anything quite so extensive as that - and what's more, the food was really good as well, no matter what dish you went for.

Another place, not too far from Monsal Head, used to be the 3 Stags at Wardlow Mires. Now, Pat and Geoff used to turn out some really good home-made food back in the day - although the pub is a bit of an acquired taste. As is Geoff. But we had some great meals there and great company.

Yes, Brian Bunce was a good host, when sober...

3 stags has seen some people take it on. In the 80s an old lady ran it and left an honesty box by the bar for anyone who wanted a drink after 10.30pm bless her. It used to attract a fair crowd from chesterfield years ago - a lot of old Barley Mow crowd from the 80s I believe.

Fischers has been mentioned which is of course excellent although the sort of place where your not supposed to ***** - so that rules me out. A few other lesser known pubs in then hills worth a jaunt are The Cock & Pullet in Sheldon for a liquid lunch. The lathkill in Over Haddon is just a terrific pub and Jason who is always behind the bar is a town fan and The George in Alstonefield, perfect pub in perfect village. Brilliant base for walking or just getting drunk or trip to Dovedale and then getting drunk.

Is the owner the guy who's seemingly always there?

If you get a table at the window you'll get a lovely view of the ground thrown in for free ... Result ;)

Yeah, his name is Raj. He likes to oversee everything lol. He's a really nice bloke who works really hard.

The Early Bird in Casa is excellent value for money.

Not your normal meal out but the food for our wedding reception at Hassop Hall on Saturday was something else!! Everyone was raving about it. Been up there before as well for another wedding plus a couple of Sunday lunches and always been good.
