Or you could have replied with the report highlighting games have a negative correlation to crime and violence. But you went with an insult instead.

It’s meant to be an insult. Your age (him guessing your a baby boomer, I’ve no idea) giving you preconceived ideas about “the youth of today” and the stereotypes they conform too. Whilst at the time him being a free thinker not governed by social norms.

There are absolutely no reasons for anyone to carry a knife in public.

Make it as unappealing to carry such a weapon as possible.

Hardly gonna catch them without a massive push on stop and search targeted at the likely offenders

Stop and search has never been the answer, it’s not been successful at all, just hostile.
My way forward would be to have policemen/women doing actual police work, foot patrols around neighbourhoods, use surveillance on likely offenders, actually catch these idiots buying the weapons and then handing them out to their mates, putting them on their person while travelling around towns and cities carrying them..
Facts are facts, people carry knives around to either harm or threaten harm, anyone caught should face 5 years prison, minimum sentence and order the police force to do police work and patrol these neighbourhoods and catching the offenders in the act.
There’s no need for anyone, anywhere at any time to carry a bladed instrument onto public transport or anywhere else where there’s people around.

Would hardly call it an insult. It's just a boomer thing to say. Those violent movies probably played a part too etc.
