Does any team ever go more than 2/3 seasons without a surprise heavy defeat? Man City maybe, but I can't think of many others. Even Liverpool conceded SEVEN to Villa a few years ago. And look at the poor Blunts thraped regularly this season, although in their case not really unexpected. What I am saying is it can happen to anyone even the best from time to time.
Of course it was a dreadful performance on Saturday and the spanking was fully deserved, but it can happen to anyone. The important thing is that it doesn't happen again for a good while. At least hopefully not again this season!

The stats don't lie and when we have a defence leaking goals on par with Kidderminster and Woking, IMO it's a big issue - even Cook on his latest DT interview also highlighted the amount of goals conceded column.

Yes, I think PC will address the elephant in the room next season with a new back line

Concede 5 goals in the last 10 games and we’ll end up with a worse defensive record than last year. That’s with a better keeper.

We’ve scored loads more of course, but we just keep conceding pretty naff goals. I can personally see a whole new back 4 coming in, with Clements, King and Palmer leaving, plus Frecks loan up. That’s two players for each position, battling for a start

We’ve given a large chunk of the back 4 new contracts recently. I can see some tweaks, particularly a new right back and right sided central defender, but I wouldn’t expect an overhaul.

Agreed, and it won't have dawned on him on Saturday either, he's not daft and knows the defence (as well as midfield and attack) will need strengthening in the Summer.

Grimes, Williams and Horton I think got extensions.
Personally, if OOC, I'd get Clements on an extension too.

I struggle to recall a decent goal score against us by a team actually attacking us from back to front, probably the lad Conn-Clarke at Altrincham back in Jan at home.

I reckon at least two thirds of the goals we have let in this season are a mix of sloppy play, lack of concentration or mistakes.

We are on par with Woking and Kiddy but at the same time to add some perspective there are 16 teams that have conceded more goals than us and only 6 including those two conceded less....

Southend - 37
FC Halifax - 41
Bromley - 42
Kidderminster - 44
Oldham - 46
Woking - 46
Gateshead - 47
Chesterfield - 48
Solihull Moors - 50
Barnet - 51
Altrincham - 51
Dagenham - 51
Wealdstone - 51
Maidenhead Utd - 51
Rochdale - 53
York - 56
Boreham Wood - 57
Dorking Wanderers - 58
Ebbsfleet - 60
AFC Fylde - 65
Hartlepool - 66
Aldershot - 67
Eastleigh - 74
Oxford City - 79

Shecks too, that’s a whole back 4. I’d agree Clements may get a new deal. King must be a ‘maybe’ but in L2 think we need someone more defensively solid. Can also see Palmer being replaced.

It is amazing how stats can paint whatever picture want even if the fact is true. Probably says more about Woking and Kiddy than it does us. Although I do agree I’d like to see us a little tighter at the back, but probably not if it means we’re not as exciting going forward

I suspect if you were to do a similar list of goals scored Kiddy and Woking will be way down it and thats their issue leading to where they are in the league.

Actually here we go....look who is bottom of the goals scored chart!

Chesterfield - 87
Barnet - 67
Gateshead - 67
Eastleigh - 64
Aldershot - 62
Altrincham - 62
Bromley - 61
AFC Fylde - 60
Hartlepool - 58

Oxford City - 48
Wealdstone - 46
York - 45
Dorking Wanderers - 43
FC Halifax - 42
Maidenhead Utd - 39
Woking - 37
Kidderminster - 32

I think King, Palmer and Clements will be released and we will bring in a first choice RB, CB (At least 1) and LB. Sheckleford and Horton will be backups.

So we’re top (by 20 goals) of goals scored and 8th on goals conceded. I’ll take that next season, we’ll be in the top 7 if that’s the case

Personally think Schecks will be good enough to step up to league 2. Maybe Grimesy as well. However would like new starting LB and CB for league 2. Do think Horton has had a good season however, defensively he leaves plenty to be desired!

Depends what you class as a surprise defeat, while neither were heavy defeats Brentford did the double over Man City last season and in 2020/21 season Leicester went to the Etihad and won 5-2 so it does happen even to teams crushing everything before them in other matches.

I really like King, and I hope he gets an extension on his contract, but he needs to get his mojo back.
