Im hoping the knowledgable readers of Bobs Board especially the older and wiser ones eg Clarevoyant can help me with some research I am doing for the articles i write about Football programmes in the matchday programme.

Im looking to find programmes with any tenuous link to Chesterfield that have involved all of the 1966 winning team. This could be playing or managing against Chesterfield or appearing in a testimonial at Saltergate . I have managed to get evidence for 9 of the 11 but struggling to find anything for George Cohen and Sir Geoff Hurst. Geoff Hurst did sign for Stoke in 1972 but I think didn't play form them until after we played them int the FA Cup in January 1972.

Any help appreciated. Feel free to reply to this thread with any guesses of links to the other 9 players.

Geoff Hurst scored with a debatable goal in 1966.
Chesterfield didn’t in 1997 ….

Struggling with this, but I've consulted with more cognizant people, but not optimistic. Anyway one very tenuous suggestion ( on the lines of rpbs post above) There are memories of a not to astute mate when it comes to spelling, in the Saltergate Club declaring that the scenes following towns relegation preventing goal v Luton was better and more frenzied than 'his namesake goal when "people were on the pitch and they thought it was all over".

Geoff Hurst managed Telford 76-79 but can't find we ever played them, Stuart Basson will be able to say definitively.

We've never played Telford in either of their iterations.

I remember Martin Peters scoring a header against us from a near post flicked on corner for Sheffield United. It was an evening game at the kop end at Bramall Lane.
I think I have the programme from that game stored in the loft. I'll have to go up and see if I can find it.

Ive got the original programme from the Stoke game and attended the game as a youngster. There was no Geoff Hurst, but yes Banks and George Eastham played that day.
Eastham was part of the England squad in 66 but never made an appearance

Terry Paine, a member of the squad, wrote of playing at Saltergate c. 1959 or 1960 and seeing a team mate preparing to take a corner, and disappearing. He had seemingly backed himself over the perimeter wall.

I saw Liverpool regularly at Saltergate in the Central League. Sometimes if they had had a poor result, the big clubs would make wholesale changes and the visitors against our second string would be fielding a bunch of internationals. Not sure if that would have included Callaghan and Hunt for a game, but there is a chance.

They sure do mate as I've found to my cost recently. Mine has shrunk so much over the years I now find it a real struggle to squeeze through. You wouldn't think wood could shrink so much would you lol? ;)

Sorry missed out at Saltergate, guessing both those games were away?

A few more of the world cup winners I have seen play against us post 1966,

Gordon Banks for Stoke in the FA Cup match in 72,

Ray Wilson for Oldham Athletic,

Roger Hunt for Bolton.

Managed against us,

Jack Charlton for Sheffield Wednesday, and I'm not sure if Bobby Moore managed Southend against us?

Yes I remember both Liverpool and Manchester United fielding teams with the likes of Peter Thompson and Willie Morgan are two I remember.

King Kev was unplayable that day Dave. He turned Mike Pejic the England fullback at the time up his own backside all of the game.
If only Ray McHale had put his foot through the ball when he was clean through in the closing minutes instead of trying to chip Banks we would have earned a well deserved replay. That miss will live with me forever lol!

Gordon Banks and Bobby Charlton also played on opposite teams at Saltergate in the 1958 youth Cup final.

Bobby Charlton and Nobby stiles played in the same team against us for Preston in 1974/75
Nobby Stiles was also the manager of Preston in 75/76

Jack Charlton for Leeds in League Cup in 1960

Ray Wilson for Oldham in 1969/70

Roger Hunt for Bolton in 1971/72. He also played in an International X1 with Gordon banks and Nat Lofthouse at Saltergate against Manchester City in the testimonial for Dave Blakey and Ron Powell.

Alan Ball was player manager for Blackpool in 1980/81

Bobby Moore was Southend manager when we played them in 1984/85 season

Gordon Banks played against us for stoke in the FA Cup in 71/72

Martin Peters played for Sheff Utd in the home and away league games in the 80/81 season

Just cant find anything yet for George Cohen and Geoff Hurst. I will keep looking.

That's brilliant Benno and thanks for posting it. Shame on me but I'd forgotten all about Bobby Charlton and Nobby Stiles for Preston (how could I)? I wasn't too sure about Bobby Moore with Southend so thanks for confirming it. I had a sneaky feeling about Alan Ball but I wasn't at all confident so didn't mention it. By the way, great thread mate. Well done.
