543,168 supporters attended matches on the opening weekend, making it the highest aggregate opening weekend attendance this century.

That figure is over 90,000 more than the opening day of 2022/23, representing a 20% rise 👏👏

Football seems to be bucking the trend, crowd figures seem to be rising despite the rising cost of living.

Why? I've no idea, it's not a cheapish option really, especially if you factor in a couple of pints or a meat pie at the ground..

Escapism from the ghoulish hellscape?

People spend more on leisure nowadays despite the cost of living (what a dreadful phrase) rising.

Yea, that's got to be a massive part of it, getting out of the house for 2-4hrs, bit of time with mates, and a distraction to talk about, ?

On Saturday for instance - 542 more Chesterfield fans watched the Dorking game than watched the league 1 Play Off Semi Final First Leg v Preston - Incredible!

More people have time off on Saturday.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see crowds get even bigger this season, there’s that much tension in society shouting at football matches is a brilliant way of letting of steam and more people need to do that in this day and age, this is a crucial time for the club and success on the field under Cookie will even gain an even larger fan base in my opinion.

Serves em right for being so B****Y greedy.

I wouldn’t swap the atmosphere at town this season for a premiership damp squib.

could there also be a post lockdown angle to this, with people being locked in their own homes during that period, is there a sense of making up for lost time almost and since going that way people have stuck with new habits?

Definitely, I didn’t obey any of those bulls**t lockdown laws, I got to do loads of things but I always resented the fact they were stopping me enjoying going to football and appreciated it so much more when they allowed it to happen that’s why I’m not as upset when we lose as much as I used to be, just grateful that it’s another reason to live for but a promotion season will be a huge bonus preferably as champions with a 20 odd point lead but I can’t think of anything better to do on a Saturday.

The economic crisis isnt affecting everyone equally. Some dont have mortgages or rent to pay. Some are on pensions that are going up at the rate of inflation. And of course for those that are to be affected, they may not have felt the worst of it yet - and if they got the season ticket sorted before the increase in rents or mortgages, then it will be potentially a cheap option as already paid for!

We've been in an economic crisis since at least the 1970s, and probably for ever, if you believe the news, and some people are and have been struggling. However, newspapers and schedules have to be filled, and hacks have to fill 'em, and good news isn't news. Doom and gloom and victims are.

Local clubs are definitely getting more interest, but I’m sure the big boys would also point to the record Premier League average attendances last season.

A factor for opening day attendances sometimes luck of the draw. If the more well supported clubs are drawn at home the average is going to be higher. Look at us. We play Dorking at home 7,000 plus. Draw them away 3,000 max.

Who is relegated from Premier can also have a substantial affect on averages.

Also are there more subsidized / free tickets available for the less fashionable fixtures than there were some year ago ??
