Early days. Have to say , spent 10 mins trying to find the ** entrance. Poorly signposted and a dreadful walk up. One thing certain- Alfreton are a bogey team, simple as. Thought they played well. We looked ok until the changes, then a bit more ragged. Thought the Halifax lad looked a bit lost but looking fwd to Matlock.

King - Up and down the wings well. Looked sharp.
Grimes - commanding presence in defence, often had to do more to make up for a poor looking triallist aside him.
Miller - Didn’t really do much. Right or wrong.
Khan - Really busy in midfield. Definitely a player there. Gave away a silly penalty though after misjudging a clearance and let his overall afternoon down.
Payne - Worked hard but didn’t do anything to catch the eye. We were really quite poor in the first half so hard to judge a striker.
Of our current crop nobody really did anything to get me up and excited. No moment of real quality that really stood out for me.
I thought the triallist that scored our goal looked pretty good and it was a shame to see him get injured.
Tyson I thought was really poor.
Ah well minutes in the legs.
Thanks for that, nice summary.

Now that he featured in the first preseason game and will presumably have a full preseason, a loan makes no sense whatsoever

Agreed, if Rowe goes down that route, to me at least, it’ll signify he wants him gone. Hopefully not because at this level, in both boxes, he’s an outstanding asset.

Said the same, hope we've got a good 2nd string keeper lined up. None of the trialist looked owt special. Liked the look of the new signings especially Khan and Payne.

I expect a tight as ass defence as minimum. I thought I was being lenient tbh as it was a friendly

Loache made one cracking save from a Rheid header, apart from that had nothing much to do. Would like him command his 6yd box like Monty and \Smith did most of the time.
Miller certainly has skill and pace.
Khan looks an exciting signing very quick and can cross a ball.
King didnt have a bad game but needs a bit more fitness.
Payne looked red hot before he went off at ht, if he can keep fit he looks as though he'll have a few goals in him.
Grimes looks solid tall and quick used the ball well.
I think Rowe has unearthed a few gems again, was Clarke injured?

I thought we dominated the first half to be fair and created several chances or half chances
Alfreton only looked dangerous from long throws and only got their goal because of a silly challenge by Khan who i thought made several breaks with the ball which took us up the field
On /off subs in the second half meant we lost our shape and Alfertons extra match time proved decisive in the end

We fielded a fairly strong team and conceded 3 goals at Alfreton which is pretty amazing. Were there any obvious deficiencies in defence and midfield that explain all those goals or should we dismiss it and put it down to having unfit players?

How many of our defensive players had ever played together? New keeper, new CH, CH on trial etc.
It’s a pre-season friendly, and the first one at that.
I’d suggest the score line is irrelevant. It’s simply a fitness exercise and a chance to look at individual options moving forward. It’s not much more than a training ground exercise at this stage.

Makes no sense at all if Rowe wants big Tom gone unless it's for big money. The Alfreton stream was much better than expected tbf. If I still lived in Bowzer I would have gone.

We aren't going to get big money for Denton though. I'd guess we did well if we got our money back on Taylor.

Just wondering if by the time we play Bradford tactics will start to come into play.

Fair enough. I hope the keepers we have lost aren't better than their replacements.

I'd imagine that defending players would mainly be concentrating on keeping things tight at the back and not conceding.
