I need someone pretty to get on my roof in the next 2/3 days (before we get any more heavy rain) as the bad weather last week seems to have caused a tile to slide out of place. The heavy rain that followed the other night saw water coming through into my son’s bedroom.
I think, and hope, it’s a very small issue but would rather put business the way of a fellow Spireite if I can.

I'm after someone to replace a very old asbestos down pipe, but I've called 8 people so far and only got 1 to come and quote so far, with another phoning me back tonight. I know it's not a big job but it should be straight forward enough. Failing that, I'll borrow a big ladder and do it myself!!

I’d recommend against this Marcia. I’m sure tips only take up to 2m of down pipe etc. Make sure you’ve fully looked into this properly before doing anything with Asbestos. Make sure you know fully what you’re doing before you start - what you should and shouldn’t do including transporting to tip etc etc etc.
Obviously it’s nothing to do with me and none of my business, but just be careful.

Pay to have it removed. This stuff is deadly and you have nither the expertise or the equipment to remove it safely. One single fibre in your lungs can kill you. I have worked with it for years and know what I am doing and it still frightens me

I've had 1 quote so far, which was over £100 which was to remove it and replace it, but not to dispose of it. I understand that asbestos is very dangerous, but I'm also aware that the replacement stuff I can get for less than £20 at B&Q, so I'm getting quoted £90 for labour on something that will take between 1 and 2 hours and I still have to dispose of it!!
I've got 2 others coming out to quote this week, but I've been told by someone else that had an asbestos down pipe that it cost them £60 2 years and that included disposal!! Unfortunately this person now lives in Bournemouth

90 quid will be for half a days work given a two hour job plus travel makes bout half a day. It also includes their costs of getting to you. 180 quid a day when you arent going to be fully employed every day of every week is only about 36 a year if they manage 5 days a week for 40 weeks.... and I assuming at that they arent VAT registered.
Sounds reasonable to me...

The only problem with it is that a builder is charged to dispose of it, whereas as a home owner I can take it to the tip and dispose of it for free.
Asbestos is fine if undisturbed. Can you guarantee that while removing it no fibres will be disturbed? That the pipe won’t be damaged etc?
What price do you put on a painful death in 20 years from knackered lungs?
