An Aston Villa supporter who was found in possession of a smoke grenade at a football match in Chesterfield has been banned from attending matches for three years.
Scott Maxwell (21) of Thirlmere Road, Hinckley in Leicestershire, was arrested at a pre-season friendly match between Chesterfield FC and Aston Villa FC at the Proact Stadium on Wednesday July 30 2014. He was later charged with being in possession of a pyrotechnic device at a designated sporting event.
He appeared at North East Derbyshire and Dales Magistrates’ Court on Friday August 15 where he was issued with a three year football banning order and fined £245, with a victim surcharge of £24 and £85 costs.
PC David Wright, Chesterfield’s football intelligence officer, said: “Mr Maxwell was of previous good character but this sentence shows how seriously magistrates take these matters.
“There has been a significant increase in the use of pyrotechnics at football fixtures up and down the country. People need to realise that it is illegal and also very dangerous.
“There have been a number of incidents where injuries have been sustained and people have required hospital treatment for burns to their hands, neck, legs , feet and eyes along with smoke inhalation.
“These devices will also affect other innocent supporters who are sitting in the vicinity of one when it is ignited.
“Anyone found in possession or igniting such articles in connection with football fixtures will be arrested and put before the courts.”

It's got nothing to so with the magistrates taking this seriously.. It's Chesterfield police on a vendetta to ban as many people as possible! A 3 year ban for a smoke bomb? Hardly carrying a knife is he? Modern football.. Ugh!

Ah yes the curse of modern football.
We all wish we could go back to the days when we could dash smoke bombs all over the place don't we? (Don't we)?!

I may be wrong but i'm fairly sure a number of fans up and down the country have received similar punishments for the same offence bearing in mind its illegal to enter a ground with one isnt it so its hardly our local coppers getting their stats up!! For all the hassle they cause to the folk around them when let off and the ban the actual user can get i really dont understand why folk bother with them.

Almost any conviction triggers a Victim Surcharge. This money goes into a pot and is all distributed to charities who work with or support victims of crime.

Why do people think it is acceptable to take Smoke Grenades and/or Flares in to football Grounds. Is it a benefit to anything and will it help the viewing experience or result..... NO
Is it likely to upset people, cause damage, hurt someone or stop play..... YES
I do not think it is Modern Football just mindless, irresponsible and dangerous.
