It wasn’t at Doncaster unless it happened more than once. It was at Saltergate and, sorry to say, poor John was just awful.

Not sure that's right. He went off injured at home v Barrow and Nobby Clarke took over in goal, we'd already used our sub (our first sub at Saltergate) Danny Purcell as a replacement for Ivan Hollet, Ossy reappeared 2nd half and stood on the wing.
He did start the next home game, at centre forward v Crewe.

Now you mention it I believe you are right - but the only reason he played at centre forward was we had lost Ivan Hollet injured for a spell & John was told 30 minutes before kick off he was playing up front - no wonder he had a stinker - he actually told me at first he thought they were pulling his leg and only got ready 15 minutes before kick off.

You do not even have to go back that far the Brackley centre forward was clapped off the pitch by the town fans when he was subbed in the FA Trophy match but I did not expect you to know that

Well done superfan. I won't rise to it.

Danny Purcell made quite an entrance as substitute as I recall

He had an early chance from close range at the Cross Street end and I assume that the ball landed over the road in St Marys school

the injury to Ivan Hollett early in the match turned out to be a broken collarbone because at that time the one substitution could only be made for a bona fidi injury

Imagine that still being the case today :windup

Thanks, stand corrected.

I used to see him having a pint in Nellie's [ New Inn ? ] which was by the gates of Netherthorpe GS.

Yes, I met him most Friday nights in there - he lived directly across from Nellie's. I remember we called him cinderella as when it came to exactly 10 p.m. no matter how much drink he had left he would leave it & go home. Great lad was John, I met up with him again when we both lived in the West Midlands, I helped him out with his goalkeeping school in Bilston at times. Happy days.

I think I was confusing myself with another goalkeeping story from Doncaster.

Who was the Australian goalie we had for a while in the late 1960's ?

I was standing behind the goal there on a very cold night and he turned round and spewed up right in front of me, lovely !

Threads like these on Gordon Banks remind me of how nice this board can be.

How many of us recall Gordon at Stoke crossing the Victoria Ground pitch and shaking hands with Stevo before the third round game?
At the time I was glad Stevo didnt go to Leeds, and he clearly had a great time of it at Burnley and is still well thought of there , but I wonder if it cost him an England cap?

Either way, the two best keepers in the country played in that cup tie, and Town found 'em both.

I agree, it's great for the veterans to share the memories, quite enlightening, never knew Stanley Matthews played at Saltergare or that CPS could be right about something  the secret is posting more often

 not on this thread, although I did see Banksie play in the flesh, in 1985 at Elland Road 1966 World Cup Final anniversary game in aid of the Bradford fire with 18 of the 22 players taking part, including all of England's starting XI,fantastic occasion for a very worthy cause

I'm surprised that I hadn't heard of this game before. Some finishes by Geoff Hurst there.

Agree, the header was almost a carbon copy, sadly a sign of the times with football back then that only 19,000 attended

I was going to comment on the low attendance but in 1985 it was seen as good turn out. It was either that season or the one either side that saw FL attendances hit rock bottom.

Two thirds of that 19000 look like they were on one end.
