yeah, i did that. rest sounds crap. 3 TV channels, having to walk to the telly to change channels. horrific.
The best bit about only 3 channels meant you didn't become a slave to the TV. There's a lot of dross on the telly nowadays but theres also a lot of "must see tv" and I know I become a bit of a slave to not missing my shows. This in turn limits my other activities that I used to do much more of. I'm not complaining don't get me wrong I love modern tech and how it's transformed our lives but sometimes just wish my kids could experience the simple life that I grew up in. Ah well back to the box sets, XBox, IPhone, Ipad, unlimited music streaming, car that doesn't need 3 hours to start in cold weather, online shopping, YouTube, efficient central heating, huge variety of food in the shops and everything else that makes modern life so comfortable

Puppets that had strings
Fireball XL5
when you weren't Palmed off to some childminder because your mum was always there for you
When mum cooked
When life wasn't based on greed
Milk at school
11 plus
When you sat down as a family to eat
Basically when life was so simpler and laid back
SAVE A LIFE

No one misses cold houses, sharing bath water and coal fires. No one misses not eating meat everyday, and having porridge for breakfast and jam sandwiches for lunch, or having to share your brothers bike.
They miss being young.
It just happens that this is what they had when they were young.

Stored in crates outside in the school yard in quart bottles
Frozen in the winter and curdled in the summer

playing out until gone dark without parents worrying about paedos (turns out they were EVERYWHERE, I must have been an ugly kid)
jumping your Evil Knievel toy down the stairs when your parents were out
walking past trebor just to smell the air
Watching Heidi and Why Don't You every day of the 6 weeks holidays
Having to actually go to your mates houses to see if they were coming out
If you missed watching a tv show you had missed it for ever, unless it repeated

Last time I took a walk around Bolsover all the tracks and pathways we used as kids had grown over. The track on top of the Hornscroft bank and on the Back Hills have gone because kids don't play like we used to.
Delighted to read though, that they are going to restore the steps from 'Surprise View' down to New Station Rd that were destroyed by the landslide. Never though I'd make that walk again. Hope it's done by next August.

I remember the steps well - daily jaunt to and from the bus stop at town end on way to Shirebrook school. The most memorable time though was later in life - Dec 1990 when we were living off horse head lane, mum came to stay due to lack of power on the valley estate, neighbours rang to say her alarm was going off so I walked / slid / fell all the way down - including all the way down the steps on my backside, feeling and every one!!

Being organised and arranging time and place to meet before you set off - and being on time because you couldn't ring to tell people you would be late!

Smart car, I would have loved one of those, but it was original cavalier and sporty novas for me due to 5 years of further education and no money....
You know you are getting old when one of the (fit youngish female) lawyers you work with describes her near neighbour as "getting old and frail - probably about 55"
Heartbreakig!!!

Entering Southampton. "Welcome to Southampton. Gateway to the Empire." The Docks full of liners, most of them registered in GB, with British owners and manned by British crews. Different coloured funnels plain to see from the city centre. Squadrons of cream and black taxis bustling around when a big liner was docking or embarking.
Attending a school in Fareham where the union flag flew at the entrance and where Trafalgar Day and Empire Day were celebrated in a fest of red, white and blue.

No central heating.
A zinc bath in front of an open coal fire - and having to keep away from the fire side 'cos it got so hot.
But...
..Bodens chippy.
