I don't think Walsall fans think as highly of Smith as Cook seems to do.

Seems that way. I wouldn't have a problem with that with Roberts out once Johnson has return to Villa, but as it stands now it's the wrong call for me. IF he must go down this path asap (and it's not a bad idea tbf), then I'd go with Johnson over Ryan. Normally I wouldn't split those two up, but we have a chance of giving one of our players a bit of a rest and not to risk him getting injured, whilst making the most of Johnson while he's ours.

It concerns me that Cook seems intent on changing everything that's served us so well thus far.

Well its really three players, with Ryan and Morsy possibly being given licence to get up the pitch a bit more, probably one at a time.

Just depends on how you look at it... 4-5-1 or 4-1-4-1?? The former is more defensive relying on counter attacking football; the second is a little more offensive. Either way, to me it looks as though our full backs are just going to sit as in the Mourinho way so we keep our defensive shape. Not sure it will work as well at home as we need to commit more players’ forward than this system allows; especially seeing as Morsy and Ryan will be asked to help out with their defensive duties. I can't see Gardner or Clucas being asked to do too much back pedalling, unless Cook is still wanting his fullbacks to commit [discuss]
TBF we could have done exactly the same tactic with Morsy as the one with Ryan and Johnson in the middle of the four without the need to bring a loan player in and it would have probably worked better as Gobern has to go some to be a better destroyer (as Cook puts it) than Morsy and combined with leaving arguably our best player out (I fail to see how this wouldn't have been better, but hey ho). I do get if he wants to cast a closer eye over the new lad before signing him down in January as it seems Huddersfield may like to get rid and free up a wage themselves (so I get that bit).

Seems more setup for counter attacking football if you ask me, whilst keeping a rigid shape at the back. It probably will work as long as all the players know what they are doing and have a good understanding of each other. I'm with you; I don't think there was need for wholesale changes at this moment in time. The funny thing is with this system, we use less attacking midfielders than before and what have we got by far the most of in the club?? (as the two in the middle of the four have to get behind the ball and graft, especially with a young inexperienced lad playing as the destroyer or chief defence protector).
Playing our normal game and our strongest side, I would be very confident of going to Walsall and coming home with the three points, but now it's all the unknown and I hope it doesn't unsettle the players as much as it has me
