Didn't Billy Mercer come to us on loan from the blades. Maybe I'm wrong just thought he did

Think you are right. In my opinion the best keeper we have had in the last 40 years.

Billy Stewart who played in the 2nd leg at Saltergate after Beasley was injured then the final at Wembley. He had a bit of a chequered history with us after some remonstrating and disagreement with the Kop when playing for Chester a few years previously. I think maybe 88/89 when we were relegated to the bottom division? And re his performance in those approx 120 mins I don’t think he had much to do at all!

I think the disagreement with Billy Stewart stemmed after Chester scored/ final whistle Billy turned to the kop and pointed down and "mouthed your going down" which didn't go down well with the kop at the time.

It was yes, very much a mixed night for Nicky Law that ultimately came good!

IIRC Gerry Armstrong joined us on free, scored on his debut, and very little else afterwards….

Are you mixing it up with Gerry Creaney?

As for loan players with a screw loose, how about Ishmail Demontagnac?

Franck Moussa. Head and shoulders above anything we had in that team, not that it was difficult as we were hopeless that year, but he was very good.

Mercer was better than Pollitt for us, I reckon. Maybe Pollitt had the higher ceiling and went on to achieve more but with us he seemed to be taking it a bit too easy at times as the level was beneath him. King Billy was just superb throughout. Just checked and after leaving us he only played 25 matches for Bristol City before retiring.
These go to eleven.

David Reeves was on loan initially wasn't he?  Or was that a second stint?

Purely Loan Players, who never converted to permanent:

Marton Fullop

Jack Hunt
Georg Margreitta
Scott Griffiths (really struggle for a good second centre half, I think Griffiths did fill in there once or twice)
Conor Townsend

Thomas Hitzlesperger
Sammy Clingan
Jamie O'Hare

Donald McDermott
Lee Novak
Daniel Johnson

Notable mentions to:
Trevor Carson
Aaron Ramsdale
Harry Tyrer
Liam Ridehalgh
David Davis
Franck Moussa
David Perkins
Jamie McMaster
Kevan Hurst
Mark Duffy
Deane Smalley
Andy Scott
Caolan Lavery
Adam Rooney
Conor Wilkinson

Kev Hurst played for us so much I would have swore he was a permanent signing!

Barry Conlon could go in that category. If he didn't sup 100 pints of Guinness a week he would have had a decent career at a higher level.

No one mentioned Steve Cherry yet? Probably best keeper I’ve seen for Town and made it to top flight with Notts who signed him after we beat them 3-0 at home in a game where they proper battered us!
