But as we have seen, can we easily find better? Perhaps for four or five, but I doubt for say ten.

Not sure about easily, but I have full confidence in Cook.

I’d suggest the very opposite

I’d expect that out of those out of contract first team squad players who when fit are regular on the pitch or the bench we offer contracts to are in a number you can count on one hand

I’d also think that one or two who are under contract are encouraged to go out on loan or accept a free transfer

Leaving a dozen players or so (including those under contract) I’d expect massive changes to the squad

It will be a huge summer

Bailey Hobson - Hasn't progressed enough
Darren Oldaker - Writing seems to be on the wall that he's on his way out
Ryan Colclough - Either off field issues or simply hasn't coped with the step up to influence game
Mike Jones - Love him but think this last injury has done him for good, expect he'll become part of the #bloatedbackroom
Kane Drummond - Maybe harsh as he was thrown in at the deep end over Christmas and could develop well out on loan, but we haven't got the space in the squad to develop him here
Michael Jacobs - Been pretty anonymous this season, I think he'll be gone
Ryan Boot (GK) - Offer another deal, but he needs better competition for the No 1 spot

Jamie Grimes
Tyrone Williams
Ash Palmer
Kyle McFadzean - These 4 will depend on how confident we are Dunkley returns fully fit and whether Ty plays again, we can't keep them all, and if Chey is coming back, you'd expect only two of them, with another CB on the shortlist. I honestly don't know which ones. Grimes gives balance and 100% commitment but has limitations, Palmer has been performing out of his skin since coming back, but was on the way out earlier in the season. McFadzean looks a fantastic communicator but his age worries me. Though I think Cook signs him for certain and 1 or 2 out of the other 3 depending on Dunkley

Ollie Banks
John Fleck - With Metcalfe not guaranteed to return, Oldaker on his way, Jones done, it's possibly one or the other here to join Naylor as backup in Midfield, in the hope we bring in the next Morsy and Ryan partnership

Lewis Gordon (+ an option) Take the option

Vontae Daley-Campbell (+ an option) We won't be taking the option

Liam Jessop
Ashton Rinaldo (GK)
Ali Mohiuddin
Connor Cook - I don't think any of these have an impact on squad numbers (Cook?), and unlikely they affect financials too much either

Janoi Donasien - we just haven't seen enough of him

I’d imagine the majority of those offered deals will be used as squad players next season and any incomings will be signed on the basis of being regular first team starters.

I think the fact only Dobra was offered a deal from those out of contract tells you Cookie doesn’t think the rest are capable of playing in L1 or winning the title in L2.

Capable of L2 mid table or so. Fadz slightly different IMO as he was signed in Jan.

If players like banks are offered a deal, it’s gonna be as a squad player I’d imagine

Most players now know so expect to see some murmurings on social media and maybe a few goodbyes from a handful today / tomorrow

Most of the out of contract players are simply not good enough at L2 level now if we truly want automatic promotion. Of the contracted players Madden just seems past it IMO and Naylor seems to have lost a yard or two as well.

We definitely need alternatives up front as Grigg is never going to run the channels and I hope we can find a young hungry pacy forward. But then isn’t every team looking for that!

Cook tends to go with players he knows and worked with before. Should be an interesting few weeks.

The 4 I'd really try for are, Boot, Gordan, Darren O (if he wants to stay) & Grimes (or Palmer) as backup CB

Bailey Hobson - He's looked good in patches but I think he's better off at Barnet since they want him, I wouldn't be against him staying though as a squad player
Darren Oldaker - Would have offered a deal but I think he's had his head turned by the rumour mill.
Ryan Colclough - Sadly I think he'll go, been great for us but times up
Mike Jones - barely played this season, I suspect he'll be a coach
Kane Drummond - I think Oldham might have him, Would be good in a "ball over the top" team for his pace but its not the way we play
Michael Jacobs - Release for me, been okay but wages to contribution is lower than others
Ryan Boot (GK) - Offer another deal but sign someone over the top of him

Jamie Grimes - I'd offer him or Palmer a deal as backup CBs but not both
Tyrone Williams - Sadly I think he needs to go, he'll get more football elsewhere
Ash Palmer - see Grimes
Kyle McFadzean - Pay per game or release.
Janoi Donasien - release due to lack of minutes played

Ollie Banks - Offer a 12 month deal
John Fleck - release or pay per game

Lewis Gordon (+ an option) Definitely activate the option
Vontae Daley-Campbell (+ an option) Release due to lack of minutes

I think the real effort needs to be on under 30s

I can't see there being wholesale changes, but rather good money put into three or four players who will make a massive difference. A right full back is a definite, a replacement for Mike Jones is another, a right winger, and a striker of course. Anything after that and I'll be more than happy.

Drummond springs to mind, unless he's ate a massive portion of humble pie or he'll be walking on gilded splinters with his manager.

Madden maybe, but guess he's on a fair wedge. If he goes I think it'll be likely Scunthorpe.

If there is anyone on that list it might be cheaper to loan them out

Bailey Hobson - Quite like him but not quite at the right level, hope to see him do well elsewhere and it’s shame he couldn’t go back to Barnet earlier this year

Darren Oldaker - Another one I quite like and would be alright as a back up player but reckon he’ll move elsewhere for regular game time

Ryan Colclough - Personally would keep as I am big fan of him when he gets going, think he might leave though

Jamie Grimes - great servant to the club and a top pro but probably would not keep as he deserves to be a regular starter at a NL club / lower L2 side

Tyrone Williams - always thought he was a good squad player for us but unfortunately had that terrible injury so not sure we’ll see him in a town shirt again

Mike Jones - again probably the end of his playing career for us but would like to keep him as a coach as he is a top professional

Ryan Boot (GK) - keep, been very good the last third of the season, bring in another keeper to challenge to be the 1st choice as Thompson was not suitable this year unfortunately

Ollie Banks - great servant and would offer another year as a squad player, can see him going elsewhere though

Ash Palmer - played himself into another year contract for me personally, even if it’s as a squad player/back up

Michael Jacobs - would not renew as he is getting on and not pulled up any trees recently, unfairly maligned at times though personally as he’s not a bad player

Kane Drummond - release, not good enough for this level at all and doubt his recent off the field antics would do him any favours

Connor Cook - keep I suppose, makes up the numbers and don’t think he has an impact on finances too much

Lewis Gordon (+ an option) - would give him another year as a back up left back / squad player, very good defender but frustrating at times going forward as he opts for the safe (sideways/backwards) pass

Vontae Daley-Campbell (+ an option) - wouldn’t renew, hardly played

Liam Jessop - quite like him but not sure if he’ll make it at this level, maybe another year out on loan to see

Ashton Rinaldo (GK) - not seen enough of him to comment, maybe another year ?

Ali Mohiuddin - as above

John Fleck - one more year as a squad player as long as wages aren’t too much, played himself into another season with recent games but wasn’t great in the play offs to be honest

Janoi Donacien - 50/50, good player but made of glass

Kyle McFadzean - possibly one more year, good experience professional but age is a big concern though

My twopenneth

Bailey Hobson - Release, not quite at this level.

Darren Oldaker - Release, likely to head back down south.

Ryan Colclough - Release, I like him but has too much baggage.

Jamie Grimes - Release, gave 100% but too slow now.

Tyrone Williams - Release owing to the terrible injury. Shame really.

Mike Jones - top pro, time to retire but hopefully room for him as a coach.

Ryan Boot (GK) - Retain, but needs competition.

Ollie Banks - Offer a year if he wants to stay.

Ash Palmer - Offer a year if he wants to stay.

Michael Jacobs - Release, although I quite liked him and he gambled by shooting outside the area.

Kane Drummond - Release, blotted his copy book.

Connor Cook - keep as squad player.

Lewis Gordon (+ an option) - get him signed up.

Vontae Daley-Campbell (+ an option) - quite liked him, I'd take a chance with one year.

Liam Jessop - keep as squad player.

Ashton Rinaldo (GK) - jury out, keep as squad player.

Ali Mohiuddin - as above

John Fleck - pay per game fitness permitting

Janoi Donacien - Release, too injury prone.

Kyle McFadzean - Release. Too old.

Agree with most of that but I don't think Phil, Ash and PC are the sort to kick a player when he's down. Ty will get some sort of deal to continue his rehab.

PC challenged VDC to get fit and earn a contract a few weeks back when he was put back into the squad, he's not even made the bench since then, there's probably more chance of me getting a contract than him.

If we really wanted Oldaker to stay I dare say he wouldn't have been cast aside months ago.
