Yeah isn’t it
Yet he was in the end a lonely old man living on his own and was so happy that a couple of us took the time out to visit him and have a chat with a cup of tea and a few biscuits
He was so happy that we’d actually taken the time and to pop in and see him him.
When you think about it - how sad is it that this war hero as a lonely old man when we owed him so much.
It’s a sad story. The thought of him being alone for long periods of time after what he went through. All he craved was some company now and again. The thing is, and many serving and ex-servicemen would agree I’m sure, it’s not about being put on a pedestal and being classed as a hero as that’s the furthest thing from your mind. What they did is about serving and protecting our country particularly our people. It’s considered a privileged duty.
Last week I was discussing our recent pay rise with a colleague at work and he was explaining how he was struggling with bills etc. He said that I was lucky I had a good military pension. Something that’s been said to me many times over. People don’t mean any ill by saying that, but the word lucky in that context I find a little offensive. There is absolutely no luck involved.
I missed most of the coverage today due to other commitments but the snippets I’ve seen makes me proud to be British. Like my son always says, never be disrespectful to the older generation because you have no idea of the journey they have had to travel and the pain and heartbreak they have had to endure.
