The history must play on the players and specifically Cookies mind. It must also play on maggies mind knowing how much he as cost us. Will he go out with a sympathetic approach? Will he go out to prove he won't be influenced by past misdemeanors (maybe the appointments bod is testing him to see if he can go up a level)? Or will he be just crap?.
Perhaps as he enters the pitch a rendition of " I Had a Wheelbarrow" by the kop may disorientate him a bit like he was in the first 20 minutes at Wembley.
A completely ill thought out appointment (or is it?).

Makes absolutely no difference. Play well, we get 3 points. Refs have bad games from the time time, that's life. The refs performance Saturday will be insignificant if we play well.

While he has been crap for us before i doubt the players will be thinking too much of it going into the game...he's just one of a number that has been crap the last few seasons.
We play well it wont matter.

If the ref is to have such an influence on this game then we need to be doing the same, you may argue it's better opposition, but are Morecambe much, if at all better than an FC Halifax side who consistently reach the playoffs most seasons in the division these lot are heading to next campaign?
Lest we forget.... even David Elleray gave us a penalty once

Put the ball into the onion bag enough times and we will win. The Board knows that, Cook knows that, the players know that, the crowd knows that. All and sundry need to believe and make it happen. Does not matter how bad the officials are if we make sure we are on our game we will achieve. If we fail to turn up we cannot make the officials an excuse.

Flip side of it is the referee is coming in knowing what has happened in the past so will it affect him. Playoff Final aside which was probably swept under the carpet by the National League who are inept he will know that the penalty decision he gave was incorrect as we've been told by the league\officials it was wrong so will it play on his mind.

Agree with your last paragraph. A crap appointment putting unnecessary pressure on both parties, they could have pulled any name out of the hat, but they didn't. They would have been perfectly aware of the history. So why pick him?
Let's hope all goes smoothly and there are no big contentious decisions to be made.

Yep would have been easier to not put him in charge just to avoid any issues. Reminds of a time in local cricket when we went to play a game with us top and the home team second in the league, got their and the league had appointed their captains dad and their groundsman as the umpires for the game. They were both qualified umpires and official registered league umpires but it just seemed a strange decision to put them in charge for the game. As it happened we won, their were no issues but it could have gone wrong very easily when it was something that could have been easily avoided.

Has happened a couple of times in recent seasons leading to appointments being changed but normally for other reasons such as potential affiliation with other clubs affected by the game etc not just because we dont agree with their past performances. If clubs were allowed to do that then likely every club would be complaining about refs every week!

It's been done albeit by Wrexham (suprise) in the NL they where at D&R and were appointed a ref from Essex (they weren't happy with him previously) but played the locality card. So what did the league do? Swapped him with the ref for our game at Southend, which according to Google is in Essex.

That brings up a bit of fun trivia (mentioned by Trigger) as any ref given us 2 or more pens since dear old david in '97?. There must be, I'm sure someone will tell us.
