Couple of things we need to bring in, besides players, more imaginative throw ins and practice some dead ball moves.

I was meaning that our usual short throw,at a speed that the recipient has no chance of controlling and either ends up at the feet of an opposition player or straight out for their throw, should be mixed up with throws to players more central or even, preferably,to someone not marked by two six foot twelve rough arses. For many seasons we just do identical throws and poor free kicks, and don't get me started on short corners.....

And yes,it is very boring without football, even though I do actually have a life away from it (though family may disagree).

Well. I think you make a valid point re our throw ins. We invariably lose a turnover from our thrown ins, and even conceded goals this last season very soon after we gave.up possession from our throw ins. No one ever seems to want the ball and there never seems to be a tactic, other than play a short one to someone well marked and fight for the 50:50 scraps.

What i've heard on the grapevine.....

Mcfadzean and Fleck signed
Metcalfe looking like he is coming back, no idea if loan or permanent
Palmer off to York
We're very much in the mix for Markanday but he's got a lot of offers including one from Luton

Burton and Exeter also interested in Markanday. Lad apparently wants to come here over these but agent is pushing for a bigger signing on fee which could potentially cripple the deal.

Whilst ever there’s interest from elsewhere with Markanday, it’ll rumble on for a while. His agent knows he’s in a strong position playing the waiting game for now as teams will just try & gazump eachother in terms of what they’re offering him if they really want him.

As long as we make a strong, competitive offer, I’ll be fine with that regardless as to whether we get him or not. We’d all obviously love him here, but wouldn’t want us to blow a big proportion of our budget on him if things get silly in terms of a bidding war. I’m sure Cook won’t allow us to be held to ransom anyway, he’s been about far too long to get drawn into that.

If true, my thoughts on that are:

1) Happy to have 2 very experienced players on board, who with a full Cook pre season under their belts, I think could shine. People forget the lack of games both had had prior to joining us, and they got thrust straight in & ended up picking up injuries. Get them properly fit & we have 2 very good players. Aslong as the main bulk of our recruitment is players in and around their early / mid 20’s to give us a nice balance.

2) Can only assume if he’s coming back it’ll be permanent, as Everton have form for sending their loan players out to a division higher than they were previous as we saw with Tyrer. Would be a great signing if so.

3) Palmer to York would surprise me as their owner didn’t even know who he was the other day when he did the Banks interview. I would not be surprised to see him go though, as I can imagine we probably offered reduced terms and max 1 year contract, but his end of season performances will probably earn him a 2 year deal elsewhere.

4) Thoughts on Markanday in post above

I'm think it may be a loan, he's different to Tyrer in that Tyrer had two very good spells playing week in week out so going up a level each time made sense. Metcalfe was probably a bit hit and miss prior to his injury but did finish the season well. Metcalfe is also a few years younger and i think it was his first season playing senior football unlike Tyrer. Unless there was concrete interest in him from above another season at league 2 with us makes sense as a loan move.

What do you think Everton will want to do with Tyrer?

I'll be honest i've not really kept track of how he's got on this season but Everton have let two keepers leave in Asmir Begovic and Joao Virginia who were 2 of the three first team keepers with Pickford. Alongside Tyrer they had another young keeper out on loan at Accrington. You would think at some point one of these could end up as the 3rd keeper in the first team squad. Tyrer is 23, 24 in December and has signed a new 1 year deal taking him to June 2026. So two options, he stays as one of the three first team keepers but that will likely mean playing very little after three years of regular football or another loan presumably at Championship level to test him and come the end of the season he's either let go or stays as a first team back up option as Pickford isnt really going anywhere for the foreseeable future.

I think they may try and loan him out again this season signing at least one backup keeper maybe reassessing things in January.

You'd hope the visible improvement in Metcalfe during his time here will count in our favour, too?

It was obvious the lad had ability early on but since returning from injury and forcing his way back in the side, he's improved massively and really started to have a positive impact on games and becoming a goal threat, too.

There might be better out there right now, but maybe not with the potential to improve even more during the season.
