Owned by Chinese, simply must be taken into Government control

The importance of having a primary steel making facility in the UK cannot be overstated

Stop importing cheap steel and make it a condition of planning applications that British Steel is used (Universal Studios)

We are almost on war footing ffs, we need to protect our own industrial infrastructure

True, the steel works went up near where im from (redcar) still think green steel works is the way forward long term like what they are building at wales, traditional steel works are polluting and use too much energy

I hope they pass the bill to nationalise British Steel and properly invest in new tech such as arc furnaces.

Then along with network rail and the (nationalised?) train train operators, have a proper joined up policy on renewals and maintenance.
A new hope.

Pity Thatcher didn't when she shut it all down or sold it off. The country is still paying for her policies. Social housing being one of the largest problems

So what happens if the steel required outweighs the amount of recycled steel available? New steel will always be needed

So you’re saying nearly half a century later she’s still to blame for the mess this country is in? You’re crazy pal. This country and its multiple governments have had ample opportunities to change things but have chosen not to, including your precious Labour Party.

Or alternatively you could argue that things were such a mess after the shambles of the 70s where something needed to be done to give people hope for a better future not more of the same.

Selling housing stock cheap without ploughing some of the money received back into new housing was a daft idea... but people like short term cash without thinking of the consequences... (even trade union leaders asking for unaffordable deals that drive job losses from loss making organisations...)

Critical infrastructure ie the utilities, transport, housing etc should never have been sold off. Yes labour in the years they were in power should have renationalised them. What about the 38 years they were not in power. So you believe that none of the problems can be attributed to Thatchers policies

They were I agree but the answer wasn't to close our manufacturing down and sell everything off for give away prices. Do you not think things could have been done differently and better?

No not at all. I am not defending Thatcher, she was instrumental in bringing in the problems you speak of. My point is there has been every opportunity to put things right but successive government failed to do so. Thats because the crop of politicians both from Westminster and locally have been so, so poor.

Blaming Thatcher for the current mess of our steel industry doesn't wash nor does the degraded mining communities. Governments have chosen not to do anything. Its like blaming Thatcher for the state of our waterways, it's nonsense. Yes she brought it down but no other government has tried to make it better and you have to admit, they have had plenty of time.

I have to disagree. Best steel industry in the world sold or closed. Leading ship builders and it was decimated. A sea of oil sold off. Water quality degrading due to profiteering by private foreign companies. Essential utilities owned by foreign companies. All sold on the cheap but cost billions to take back. I am not blaming Thatcher directly but the as a whole we are suffering because of the course she set so ultimately IMHO she is to blame.

Things could always be done differently and better - and especially with hindsight. Some of what she did was great and gave people a belief and a chance to chase their dreams. Some of what she did was wrong, and the same can be said for every govt since.

Interestingly globalisation was the way forward when we all wanted the benefits of cheap products and the improve quality of life it brought us by importing from wherever in the world. But we always had rules around defence organisations and retaining control of them... but it seems it was OK that they cant get any steel from anywhere except potentially the enemy...

Perhaps we should have saved some of the cash that we spent, perhaps we should have foregone some of the living standards increases that globalisation brought - but that would have been a tough sell for any govt looking for election...

Hang on, isn't anything and everything to do with anything and everything that's bad just (insert own infantile slur) Starmer's fault.

It's also far easier to remember than any facts or anything like that.

Let’s spin that around - what have this government done that’s impressed you so far?
