His defensive heading abilities are mostly reassuring - would be good for a back up. I'm not sure about 'legend' just a solid, no nonsense old fashioned centre half.

Go on then what constitutes a CFC legend?

Back to the 'why he is L2 and not Prem' then?

It's all very subjective obviously but I think this list on the history site is a good place to start.

Although has Grimes made more than Taylor Harwood-Bellis (4)?

Common sense comments, with which I totally agree. His qualities as a team player cannot be denied nor his commitment to CFC.We know his faults but some of his teammates over expose him at times. His time at CFC will not be over until PC decides it is,not the fans.
When that time comes I for one will remember his commitment fondly IMO.

That.

I'm at risk of over-making a point here.. but here goes.

When we defend a corner Grimes and Palmer's jobs are to clear the danger. A few other do this too. What the CHs don't do is to flick the ball in the air in the box towards Oldaker so that he has to clear it up against a bigger player. And what the two CHs don't do when Oldaker can't do that is to stand and watch as the other side scores.

Were Grimes and Palmer to do this, we'd rightly be going ape. And yet Oldaker tends to put our CHs under almost comparable pressure with his careless and unnecessary passes to them.

As to whether Cook tells Oldaker to do it, I dunno. It may be my confirmation bias against Oldaker, but I don't recall Naylor, Mandeville, Jones or any of our midfield players over Oldaker's time putting our CHs under as much unnecessary pressure as him.

As to Grimes. Put it like this.. if I was a NL manager come to watch Oldaker, I'd compare Grimes reaction to his bad pass to that of Oldaker and I'd cross off Oldaker.

How bad must Newport be that Carlisle are odds on favourites to beat them on Saturday?

The full match is on Spireites TV.
From the point our last subs came on, I counted 11 times Grimes received a pass. Coco just 2.
I had forgotten also, Palmer made a similar error as Grimes just before they did score, but Grimes managed to toe poke the ball for a corner from under their players foot.
Also twice Jacobs managed to wander offside when well placed to cause trouble at their end.

Too early to judge the "new" Palmer imo. Let's see how it goes.

I was more referencing the jeopardy when hairy assed centre halves are asked to keep receiving short passes when Manchester United under 21 players are lurking.

Grimes seems to have more ball possession than any of our players. Much as I like Jamie surely that can’t be right?

I was thinking about Jamie grimes last night, and how the club has progressed under his captaincy. He has barely missed a game in four seasons(approaching 200 games), during which time the club has been on an upwards trajectory. Whilst others have been injured, he has been available. He has never shirked a tackle or a header in this time. His goals have won us loads of points when we were looking for a breakthrough.

I wish people would lay off him for the occasional mistake. He has proven himself as league two quality... he isn't perfect... but he is a genuine CFC legend. I just wish the fans would let him know that whilst he was here rather than after he had left.

Totally agree. He has been a great captain and servant. All defenders make mistakes, okay Jamie maybe makes too many, but he’s a fourth division player not Beckenbaur. As people have said elsewhere if he could stick to what he’s okay with - heading, no nonsense clearances and interceptions, rather than trying to be a playmaker and fannying about deep in his own half (and he isn’t the only one guilty of this.they all do it presumably under instructions to retain possession at all cost) - he would be fine for this level.

Probably, he plays a lot of balls out to the left, 99% of which are accurate, but the haters don’t see that, they see the odd mistake. Even Premier League defenders make the odd mistake.

i don't think it is uncommon in the modern game that a centre back has more touches of the ball than anyone else, with teams playing from the back, it is also a relatively safe pass from midfield back to your centre back

Opposition will allow/plan/set traps for that to happen, they know we like to play out from the back,.and they will identify Grimes as not the best with the ball at his feet.

Didn’t realise that was last night, probably what prompted the tweet from them.

Adding this to the appearances in the most victories by a 3+ goal margin and most goals by subs lists makes it all the more baffling we can barely must a shot on target in some games
