Sligo Rovers and Leek Town

Lad played at Leek Town a few weeks back. Decent little ground. 3G pitch not to everyone’s taste and parking not great but quite liked the ground.

Not bad is it?

25 years ago we had Halifax, Doncaster and Hereford coming. Yes little old Leek Town were in the Conference for 2 seasons. But the league was too big, and most of the Leek football people were off to Manchester or Stoke-on-Trent for their footy fix.

The nail in the coffin was when the FD of Britannia Building Society (HQ in Leek) decided to sponsor Stoke. Not the home town of the business.

I remember working there at the time and Port Vale fans going into the Burslem branch and ripping their passbooks up.

Nowt as funny as folk...

I'd forgotten Leek got that high. What were the attendances like?

When they got promoted the management worked out they needed 1000 per home game just to break even. Virtually all players were from Liverpool or Manchester.

The reality is they averaged about 750. For games against the likes of Halifax and Doncaster it reached nearly 2000. But these really were one offs.

Away following was between 50 and 100.

But in the second season when relegation was inevitable gates dropped to around 400. It Virtually crippled the club and quick fire relegations followed.

The highlights of the two seasons were beating Halifax with Geoff Horsfield and co 2-0, beating Doncaster away 1-0, beating Stevenage and doing the double over Rushden and Diamonds.

Oh, forgot the 7-0 win against Morecambe. Still like to rub that one in to this day...

For those interested Leek got promoted to the Conference on the same night as the replay against Middlesbrough.

This season average has been about 500. The home game against Macc reached 1700 and Leek took about 500 to Macc when they beat them away 2-1 on Boxing Day.

One last bit of useless trivia. FC United of Manchester played their very first league game against Leek CSOB (not Leek Town) with the gate being about 3500.

Yes, yes. Do you ever go in the Woodsend pub? We should go for a drink sometime. Sunday? John?

Plenty of grounds round Málaga but very few with a grass pitch (assuming that's our preference), possibly only Málaga themselves and the city athletics stadium which also has a football pitch. I think Marbella's usual home ground is currently closed so that probably rules that out.

Initially Ash Kirk said Tuesday which he thought was the 16th which confused matters but he later clarified the match was on Tuesday the 15th, kick off time, venue and opponents to be confirmed.

Wonder if it’ll be at a proper stadium or some sort of training facility, and how many Town fans will make the trip

Not sure whether I mentioned that it boasts a particularly fine car museum located in an old cigar factory...

I went to Portugal a few years back and it was really good. Again was late announced, information scarce etc and not that easy to sort but I bet 70/80 of us went.

If they get their act together and get an announcement out we’d take a fair few more than that this time around I’ve no doubt.

Was a good venue in Portugal which was surprising but a fair few of these type of games are played at training complexes
