Looks like a benefit of the new ticketing system is that we are going to enable the option for tickets to be stored in mobile wallets on phones for accessing games. Initially individual match tickets with season tickets to follow. Something i've wanted for ages as it saves having to remember my season ticket card for games!! Should even work from an Apple Watch if you have one.

Will be a doddle to use, i've been to a few games at Sunderland since they introduced them and just a case of bringing the ticket up from the wallet on your phone and then hold it to the scanner as you do a season ticket already. Will be a lot easier that printing and folding big bits of paper to scan or scanning a QR code from a phone screen.

Being luddite I prefer something physical and saves having to remember charging the phone. Run out of charge and it is the end of the world. Also seen enough people faffing around at train barriers with their mobiles - no thank you

Its slightly different to train barrier ones which are basically the same as the mobile tickets currently where you scan a code from the phone which is more fiddly. This is simply bring up the ticket like you would a payment card in your mobile wallet, on an iPhone this is just double press the power button, then place the phone up against the reader like a season ticket does currently....far more simple as its not relying on reading anything off the screen.

As for charging most people make sure phones are charged for heading out these days or charge overnight so dont think that will be a big issue and to be honest if you dont want to use it then just use your season ticket card or one of the other existing methods for a ticket. Just seems a very handy option to allow us to use.

I'm not a Luddite, spent my life as a mechanical engineer and only started using computers shortly before retirement, surprised myself the things I have found myself capable of doing on them, but phones... rarely remember to take with me when I leave the house, forget to charge on a regular basis and have little interest for them.
Would be much happier for occasional types of ticket to be placed on my season ticket, which I would have thought to be the sensible method?

They did do this many years ago at the new ground where you could have a membership card that tickets could be loaded to along with money that could then be spent on the concourses but not sure if tickets can be loaded to season ticket cards these days. I wasnt at the FA Cup game so not sure if that was loaded to the season ticket card for people or not.

However these days i suspect the number of people that being able to have tickets in mobile wallets will benefit will be the vast majority. Most people buying tickets on a per game basis will be using tickets from phones already.

Much bigger step forward. The e-tickets in current form are fiddling to use at the turnstiles and take ages to download as internet around the ground isn't always great

Having them in apple wallet alleviates all of that

Yep as mentioned used them a few times at Sunderland recently where once you are near the ground with attendances of over 40,000 mobile data is just not happening and having then downloaded on your mobile wallet just makes it loads easier. Also easier to access with two button presses rather than having to unlock phone, load email, find email, scroll to the barcode etc.

I had it on my phone on Sat trying to download the e-tickets from my email account around the ground, ended up having to walk over the ground away from the ground whilst they downloaded! Happened a few times and i've just been into the ticket office to get a physical one printed off as I usually don't turn up until about 2.55 so usually rushing about

Am I missing something here?

I can't be the only one to have screenshot the barcode before the day of the game and just pulled the image up on my phone in the queue at the turnstile to save experiencing exactly what you and Jon have described?

You can do but some mobile ticket technology is starting to move to tickets that dont allow that to work now to prevent touting etc. Its a QR code type image but it changes every few seconds so a still screenshot of it doesnt work. Will be fine with our current set up but could change down the line. Still easier to just have it in a mobile wallet which is just a case of clicking a link in an email to add it and then easily accessible from the lock screen of your phone.

When I use it on phone, like last Saturday v Horsham I take a screen shot of the ticket code and just use that from photos,

So now we are carrying a phone and charging bank strapped to your back instead of a credit card sized bit of plastic or a slip of paper.

Yes,I remember the membership card and I am sure I ended up out of pocket when they stopped them. Our three tickets as ST holders on Saturday were printed and not on our card.We have had them loaded on our ST in the past so I do not understand why this was not continued.
I understand your points about being on your phone and probably benefit a majority, but the modern curse is expecting people, and especially my age group,to be expert in the use of that technology and a lot are not.We now have the same problem with doctors and dentists, car parking, buses etc,,. and it is causing lots of problems for us older ones.
We really do need a choice and not to be sneered at by younger generations just because we are not comfortable with these changes.I also appreciate that many older people are OK with the way phones are used nowadays, but conversely are not confident in using a computer other than to trawl the internet.

Agreed.
It was bad enough when they took farthings out of circulation and then the buggers made us suffer the traumas of decimalisation and now this.

Well in terms of our tickets its an additional option not the only one. You will still have your season ticket card and\or the current printed\mobile tickets. I wouldnt be surprised however if its a precursor to season tickets going down this route as the standard in the future. I suspect the procurement, set up etc of the current season ticket cards is a fair old expense that in the main could be got rid of by using this technology.
