As Enoch Powell once said all political careers end in failure. This could equally apply to all football managerial careers - certainly if they stay around long enough.
Now Pep Guardiola isn?t taking the England job he will probably be able to eventually retire with an almost perfect record. Probably unique in the business. Had he taken that poisoned chalice it would almost certainly have tarnished his record.
Cloughie?s stellar career ended in failure because he went on too long. Had he got the England job his record would probably have been blighted earlier.
I reckon Ferguson retired because he knew the Utd side which won his last title was the weakest and no more titles were on the horizon. He got out just in time.
What about our own manager? Apart from a blip at Ipswich Cookies career has been consistently successful albeit in the lower leagues. If he eventually gets us back to the third division i reckon he might realise that is our top level and either leave or retire before failure inevitably comes a knocking..

Although Ipswich is seen as a failure, look at where they are now?I wonder if Cookie had laid some foundations and was kicked out too soon.

Cloughie had a couple of mis-steps himself, His Derby spell ended in a back me or sack me stand-off with the Chairman and his Brighton and Leeds spells didn't exactly go well as well documented.

Depending what happens with Tuchel's tenure there is still time for Pep to step into the role if Tuchel goes after his year and a half.

Yes, it's easy to forrget Cloughie at Brighton - but not Leeds - that was unforgettable! However both were relatively brief spells compared to his success at Derby and long and initially consistently successful spell at Forest.

This thread is a good argument for Zinedine Zidane to never step foot on a touchline again
These pretzels are making me thirsty!

Fergie was one step short of the sack, and these days he certainly would have been. A manager in any walk of life needs time and the backing to create what's been asked of him/her. Instant success is very difficult to achieve and even harder to maintain, and very few have done it.
I used to like the Liverpool way, where they promoted from the boot room, and I'd like that to happen at Town when Paul Cook decides to call it a day. It may not work, but I'd love to see Webb given the seat once Cook has moved upstairs.

Don't think many would deny Danny being given a go. He has been a loyal servant and did well enough in the short period between Rowe and Cook.

I suppose the thinking behind keeping Webb was to verse him in the ways of Cookball as a possible eventual successor. If he represents continuity in philosophy whenever Cook does go (hopefully ages yet) then it?s worth a go.
These go to eleven.

Obviously yeh, but got to be a bit more than that. Dunno how many new players he brought in, but He?s always said 18 months to make a difference?.I don?t think it?s a coincidence that they just improved beyond all expectations
