I believe that Brian the Singing Miner used to have a go at it - did the fans pick it up from him, or did he pick it up from the fans?
I've never heard of any other "club song" that is as distinctively "Chesterfield" as Sailing is. Is there anything else?

It sounds amazing when it?s sung by the fans. It?s absolutely awful played over the tannoy though. Should be left for fans to sing not forced into some sort of run out song

You?ve never heard Stoke sing Delilah?
Loudest away song I?ve heard when we played them at Saltergate.

Tho my recollection of being sung from the kop back in the day, was it was only sung when we were 2 or 3 up, so sailing to victory.

Agreed. Their mass intake of breath was audible from the Kop.

I meant, I've never heard Chesterfield fans sing another distinctive song associated only with us. I'm discounting the usual football chants. I've heard Delilah, and Goodnight, Irene, and (Sunderland's) Wise Men Say, and many others.

It was used for the theme music for that post falklands series about the aircraft carrier. Don't think the song was intended to be used that way. The second verse starts "we are flying" we are quite a long way from an airport as well. I think the song is about relationships, so quite fitting really especially the 'stormy waters' reference.

It was sung quite widely 70s/80s. It's just we started singing it again, so it probably now is unique to us.

Sailing, our version, should be played to the team as they sit putting on the club colours to help them change from human to superhero.

According to its writer, Gavin Sutherland:
"The amusing thing about 'Sailing' is that most people take the song to be about a young guy telling his girl that he's crossing the Atlantic to be with her. In fact, the song's got nothing to do with romance or ships; it's an account of mankind's spiritual odyssey through life on his way to freedom and fulfillment with the Supreme Being."[2]
So its deeply religious!

The series was called Sailor, it was a documentary on the aircraft carrier Ark Royal, which aired on BBC1 in 1976.
