We also have a squad half full of players not good enough for this league.

?Half the squad? not being good enough after we just romped to 98 points the season before (would have been more had we not been on the beach for the last 5 games) & since made 5 new signings which includes x2 who were playing in league 1 last year, and x1 who won League 2, is absolute nonsense I?m afraid.

I agree there are a handful with question marks around them as to whether they?ll be good enough (I?m thinking Williams, Horton, Quigley..), but they?re no more than squad players anyway.

Depends what our aims are I guess? But interesting to note that Notts have binned off about half the squad that got them 110+ points to have a good go at L2 this year.

Who?s to say what they?ve brought in is going to do any better than those they had last year?

We?ll have to wait and see won?t we! My point being I?m sure their fans had this exact same discussion this time last year but quickly found out that plenty of their players who got them up just weren?t up to it, to get them competing towards the top end. Same with Stockport a couple of years back too

We?re playing against their 21?s + Kieffer Moore

Yet I seriously doubt any of our players would make that team.

These are runarounds against superior opposition to get minutes under the belt and to let the management fine tune tactics etc.

Let?s not forget that they also lost their manager half way through last season, which resulted in a huge drop off in form and results afterwards. I personally find the Notts County comparison very lazy, seen a few times. Completely different set of players, in a completely different system. We?ve already addressed a significant area of weakness when we signed Chey Dunkley, something they never did last summer.

Just an observation from today. I normally sit in the East stand so thought it would make a nice change to be in the West stand near the dugout. View wasn't as good and the service in the concourse! Well, took 25 minutes to get served at half time. Missed first 10 minutes of second half. Is this normal in the West stand? And there's me thinking we get a poor deal in the East stand. The only highlight was being close enough to hear Cookie and his ever changing voice. Love him...

Something is glaringly absent from this thread - the name of Jim Brown.

The bloke who's testimonial yest'di's game was.

Jim is a hero to me. To many, if not most who remember the dark days of Darren Brown. Jim not only stood firm against huge intimidation, psychological and physical, but quietly amassed evidence to see justice done.

And help save CFC.

An absolutely top bloke to know, too.

I hope he enjoyed his day. He deserves it as much as anyone associated with Town. Well done Jim...

Fully agree - yesterday was all about Jim. Probably the greatest town servant we?ve ever had.
Loyal, lovely and brilliant.

Pay no heed to pre season results friendlies are bad , testimonials worse in terms of actual football.

agreed, but our highlights don't paint half as bad a picture as the doom mongers on here suggest. The five minutes suggest that Dunkley is a huge improvement and that Boot (over Tyrer) isn't. Mandeville is well up for it and Colclough will be when he gets the minutes in. We've got to stop square passing.
Get it on, bang the gong , get it on

It was interesting watching yesterday..when we had Tyrer he was employed as a sweeper keeper amongst his other duties, which allowed the team to sit high up the pitch & keep a high press (main reason we scored so many last season)
Watching Boot yesterday, he never left his 18 yard box & we sat deep always inviting pressure on.
Is it a new Cook ploy?
I like the look of the right back, Gordon struggled a bit yesterday & no disrespect to Boot, but we do need a top quality keeper
At least the squad getting the good conditioning playing against quality teams.

It was nice to see Jim Brown looking fit and well, as well as talking with positivity about both clubs. You could tell though, that his time at our club, both as player and staff member has left a massive impression on him. A great goalkeeper for both clubs, and he should have played many more times for his country too. It's people like Jim who should be knighted, not someone who's ripped off the taxpayer by overcharging for services or products never delivered.
I wasn't expecting us to win against, what should be, a promotion seeking club, but I wanted to say thank you to Jim Brown. Great bloke, great goalkeeper, and the saviour of our club.

Yes it wasn't a great performance on the pitch yesterday, but as it was a friendly against better opposition, and the first one I've been to so far I will reserve judgment. I'm certain PC will have the players revved up to go come 9 August.

The main thing yesterday is that it was a commendable turnout for Jim Brown - including 3,500 from just up the road. He certainly was involved with some dark days here, including a certain game at Gillingham.

For me, I'll see if I can catch a game at Hassania Agadir FC over the next week or so.
