He's basically done the minimum expected of him.

A summary of the tournament so far.

First 5 games

Shite boring tactics - defensively minded set up
Poor formations
Poor substitutions and the lack of ability to change tactics
Late substitutions

Two moments of magic that kept us in the tournament.

Semi-final

A good change of formation and more positive approach and forward thinking
Second half reverted to more defensive stuff ( not sure what he says to them at half-time)

Good positive substitutions that critics, pundits, and fans have been wanting for from the start of the tournament.

Overall, poor for first five games, a great half and a few great goals from individual players.

Does Southgate take credit for last night?

The Dutch changed tactics and closed down the midfield, eventually Southgate did try something different and for once it worked.

For me England have been like a non-league side having a good cup run based on spirit and togetherness but now they face a Premier league side who do not intend losing, like us v Chelsea

I hope I?m wrong

I hope not but let's see what happens

Tommy Curtis will be working on this but, to me, any side that fields 2 wingers who don't care at all about helping out defensively is vulnerable. We've seen nowt at all as yet of how good our fullbacks are at overlapping , especially for Walker, it's his main strength. So let's change our mindset and go for it. I'd also leave 1 player up, Saka, not in the centre circle but in the space Spain's LB always vacates.
Get it on, bang the gong , get it on

Of course he did! Just shows the intellectual capacity of the anti-Southgate 'experts'.

You'll have to excuse me posting as a non-intellectual because I think Southgate is a poor manager, but last night we saw a better manager showing how to get back a grip on the game as he was being over-run. Foden was running riot, so the Dutch midfield was re-jigged to close him down, after which England ran out of ideas and reverted to their aimless fiddling about for the next 40 minutes. The two late subs were excellent and did the trick, but hardly inspired, seeing that every England supporter in the country would have done the same (possibly with Toney instead of Watkins, but certainly a different striker).
The lesson won't have been lost on the Spanish manager, who'll take it on board. The test for Southgate will be how he deals with that.

It's quite amusing to see those who nailed their colours to the anti-Southgate mast still desperately trying to justify their view. GS has organised, trained and deployed his squad brilliantly. His selections, positional changes, tactics and substitutions have been incredibly effective, snatching victory from the jaws of defeat in both the quarter-final and semi-final, and taken England to the FINAL. You'd appear a lot more sensible if you stopped digging in your already very deep hole, and possibly just admitted you got it completely wrong.

If he was half as good as you claim there should have been no question of 'snatching victory from the jaws of defeat' twice, especially with players whom better managers have coached into some of the best in Europe. The results and performances would be acceptable if he'd started with the Scotland squad - with his players he's only saved from disaster by flashes of individual brilliance.
To put it in a nutshell we're where we are despite Southgate, not because of him.

I don?t think anyone has to justify their opinion of Southgate. Apart from the odd 5 mins here and there up until last night we?ve absolutely stunk the joint out. We?ve been fortunate with the draw, and got out of jail twice. Last night we were excellent and hoping for more of the same Sunday.. nothing more nothing less.

I officially resign from trying to talk sense into the anti-GS brigade as it's obviously a waste of time and effort. Their blindly dogmatic line is that when England play poorly it's 100% due to the manager, and when they play brilliantly it's 0% due to the manager. I'm wasting no more time and effort even trying to reason with them because they are hell bent on blaming JS for every negative, and refusing to credit him with anything positive. I'm finished.

So your argument is a load of rubbish. You won't accept the fact that when they are rubbish it isn't Southgates fault, but when they play well he his the best manager in the world.

After this tournament, if Southgate doesn't stay on there is no chance in hell that he will get a gig as a manager at a top 6 side in England. The reason being is because he is not at elite level on a tactical level.

Failed club manager, mediocre International manager. Good manager in terms of bringing in youth and opportunities and reuniting the England camp.

Expect him to get a luxury gig abroad in Saudi Arabia, an international gig at a country with money to spend on a manager or a bottom end team in the Premiership who are desperate to stay up.

What I struggle with is what does his coaching staff say to him. Do they put suggestions to him or are they of the same mindset and do nothing

Football is about opinions that?s what?s great about it, I have argued with my dad more times over football than anything else, it?s not personal but never back down, I don?t agree with a lot of things Southgate does but I like him as a person , he is a great man manager like venables snd sir Bobby robson
