Well folks, at least its gripping and I've converted a Blade into a Spireite (both sons nicked my shirts and wear them in the house and around Leek). I agree with the OP and cream will rise to the top, from my perspective its all positive.

Did you convert them at around 5.45pm today?

That season, despite that, despite winning our first 12 homes games on the bounce, and being miles ahead at the top of the league at Christmas, we fell away so badly that we finished a distant 7th.

Not again I don’t think.

Was this 67/8?

I remember it as it was my first full season. Didn’t we drop our first home point (2 for a win then) with a draw against Workington. (Whatever happened to them?) around Boxing Day?
I remember my dad forecasting Luton would win the league and they did.

It was and you are right about the Workington game. I started attending c. 60/61, we were a lost cause for the years to 67/68, never looked like getting near the promotion spots after the relegation in my first season.
Surely 67/68 was going to be our season- but we totally blew it.

And the following season we finished 5th bottom just avoiding re election and the one after that we won the title with what was then a record number of points.

Etched into my brain. Crammed into the kop, I kept thinking how did we get 30,000 in Saltergate once upon a time?

It was Boxing Day 1967.
Expected a hatful and created nothing as I recall.
Massive anticlimax.

the first point we dropped at home that season was a 0-0 draw with Workington on Boxing Day

Typical town nearly 17000 turned up to see what was thought to be another certain win and Workington came along and did what is now known as parking the bus lol

Next home game, we were 2=0 up after 30 minutes on Barnsley who we had beaten 2-0 at home in the FA Cup earlier in the season- so season back on track?
Nope - we lost 3-2.
