That's probably why we never get a 'homer' but tend to when we are away

That referee knew he was the centre of attention - someone like him with the ego the size of the planet would relish the abuse he got and thrives on it

Adopting that theory would really minimise his contributions.

Reading some of the comments it’s no wonder the referees are considered poor.
Why would a youngster want to take up officiating?

Don’t forget we are National League. The players are semi professional as a rule so why expect top officials?

Arent nearly all the clubs in the National League now professional with just a few exceptions?

On the subject of refs.
Watch out for a young man by the name of Jamie O'Connor from Bolsover. I know the family and have followed his progress for a long time. He is now in the National League and did well in the game I watched a few weeks back. He took one of our pre-season games. If he didn't have a game last night he would probably have watched us, as he does. If you read this board Jamie, I hope you picked up some valuable tips on how not to referee.

Does anyone know definitively why the idiot disguised as a referee made Joe Quigley go off the pitch as soon as he'd come on, then studiously ignored him for a while before allowing him back on? Somebody said after the game that it was something to do with his socks, which seems strange, but a lot of the ref's performance was strange anyway.

Yes, the ref claimed that too much of Joe's white ankle socks were on show, and ordered him off.

Webb threw him some blue tape, which he applied whilst still on the pitch and he tried get back up for the corner we were about to take.

The ref made him leave the field (as he should have done originally).

That said, surely its up to the 4th official/Lino to check the incoming players equipment/kit is correct?

Thanks for that. Doesn't surprise me that the lino didn't notice - he appeared to see nothing all night.

Much as I hate to see dissent and general badgering of the refs, I still have a soft spot for Cookie's antics. Last night I think he was genuinely upset that he was about to lose one of his key players. to injury, 'cos the ref was giving Colclough no protection at all and he was being fouled every time he touched the ball. No team or manager is going to take that behaviour lying down, and it speaks volumes for Colclough's character that he didn't lose his rag, even if Cookie did.

There are three or four clubs that are 'hybrid' or semi-professional in old money. The rest are full time professional.

I actually thought as the match went on he was strutting around thinking what decisions can I make to make myself even more the centre of attention lol

The trouble was that he certainly achieved that feat if that was his intention

Was dragged along to watch Sunderland at Blackburn last night with my Sunderland supporting other half....way the ref officiated that game just highlighted how poor our bloke was. He was letting play carry on where he could, got decisions right which had the follow on of there was no dissent to have to deal with and you got to the end of the game and then realised you'd not really noticed him and how good he'd done. Only flashpoint was in the final moments when a blackburn a bit fed up of chasing Jack Clarke round and being given the run around kicked him up in the air which caused a few to not be best pleased with it. However he defused the situation, player was booked for the tackle, think one Sunderland player was booked for something and things carried on. Had that happened in our game on Tuesday there would have been red and yellow cards all over.

Don't the refs at this level cover our league and the North/South leagues below, which are pretty much all part-time?

Refereeing levels from the FA site

Level 1 National List (Premier League and Football League)
Level 2a Panel Select List (Conference Premier)
Level 2b Panel List (Conference North and South)
Level 3 Contributory League (Contributory Leagues)

The professional game
Upon being promoted to Level 2a, a referee becomes a part of the Professional Game Match Officials (PGMOL) who are the managing body formed by The FA, the Premier League and EFL.

Referee’s at level 2a officiate in Premiership 2 U21, EFL and NL games.
For example our friend on Tuesday night reffed in 1 EFL, 2 Premiership U21 and 4 NL games. He was actually mid ranking in issuing cards until that fateful evening

I read a couple of these clubs have changed form evening training (2 nights) to day training (at least 2 days)

To me these are hybrid and probably not far off full time

I’d say a the likes of Matlock are proper PT, one night a week
