Ron Jepson was indeed the ex mayor of Chesterfield and resided on Hunloke Avenue, a few houses up from Boythorpe Rd. A really nice bloke, unlike Sargent Jepson who didn't have a father on his birth certificate, and certainly wasn't nice at all, in fact he made The Witch finder General look a right whimp.

I had the great pleasure of working alongside Ron at the tube works in the 1970's Mr.O.
As you say he was a really nice bloke.
He was councillor Jepson when I first knew him but later became Mayor.

Actually this post has given me another reason to wax lyrical about how good Paul Cook is. Quigley under Cook became an effective impact sub with a fantastic goals to minutes record. At Forest Green this season, in the same league, he has scored zero league goals.

Says it all.

Doesn’t it just, I was really willing Joe to have a blinder and help FG to promotion and chip in with a fair share of goals but it just goes to show how well he was managed here and the ability of players around him. For me Joe encapsulated everything what was good about the club last season, never a regular starter when Grigg was fit but more than played his part with some very, very important and crucial goals and celebrated the Championship with the same joy and vigour that those of us who’ve been here years did.
As much a NL legend as any of that squad…
Sorry for the side track but it needed saying…

Spoke to bim pepple the other day about his time here , said how hard it is to play the lone striker in our formation he agreed but he said that no matter what game you have cooky gives you confidence as his man management skills are superb, think he is off to Canada , he may have to delay that a bit now.

Yes, AC, he was a really nice bloke who'd do what he could for the local area.

I didn't have a clue where he worked, and only knew him as a councillor and later Mayor. The closest I got to the tube works was nipping over the forty steps 😁.

Yes,also contributed to the tunnel boring machines, whilst at Markhams, that dug the channel tunnel from our side, think getting out of the NL was a bigger achievement though......

Yes mate it was Ron Jepson of the Chesterfield Tube Company as it was known then. I started working there in 74 and it was called TI Chesterfield by then.
I started work in the large cylinder department in the old works and thats where I met Ron. If memory serves me right Ron's daughter worked in the offices there for a short while. I think her name was Sharon.

Johnny Ayres (the fruit and veg stall) and Don (RIP) who lived on Bank Street introduced Dad to Ron. Don was the one that hollered for Ayres, could be heard all over the market.

In the day, the Ayres v Ernald Hill (aka The Ayatollah) fruit stall war was the gossip on those pitches.

Then we had Hinchleys Cafe, Hudsons Music Bar, Gills, Barry the belt seller (also a Spireite), Tallulah the knicker seller, Market Foods, R J Burnett (the tea and coffee man), plus Maria the Italian lady who was stronger than an ox. Her daughter, Rosetta, asked me on a date once but for reasons I cannot remember it didn't come to fruition. Perhaps my Staffordshire accent put her off?

And who can forget the rent collector, Rex Hodgkinson?

Amusing times, plus many other folks too numerous to mention. I have a lot to thank the good people of Chesterfield for.

You've brought back some great memories there mate. You must remember big Norman (RIP) that worked on Ayres for many years. He was my cousin.
Maria bless her would do anything for anyone. I remember her best for running errands for the stall holders such as fetching them drinks etc. The last time I saw her daughter Rosetta she was working in Massarellas Italian cafe in the pavements shopping centre. I've never seen her since it closed down though.

Hi all you Tube Works people, you’ll all know Norman Hough who became Personnel Manager. I've known Norman over 20 years but sadly he's not well now. Also Clive Turner Personnel Manager at Staveley Works a good friend of my Dad's and Geoff Davis in the same role at Markham Colliery. Larger than life characters with some classic tales to tell, in those days industrial relations was very literally hands on sometimes!

Says it all.

One of Cook's frustrations so far must be that his strategic decision to replace Joe with Paddy Madden and play the same tactics has next to no success stats due to injuries.
It'll be like having a new arrow to our bow if this combo, fit as butchers' dogs, can turn out for the play offs.
Get it on, bang the gong , get it on

Yes mate, I do remember Norman. Great guy and a gentle giant.

Then we had Johnny Ayres' kids - Christian and Denella. Johnny and his brother David wouldn't speak to one another. Also forgot to mention Michael from Ibbotsons fruit and veg - Michael was a massive Queen fan.

Maria used to help unload the van and she could give any man a run for his money with sheer hard work. Dad wasn't happy when she broke on of his measuring sticks.

I could never stop coming over to Chesterfield from Leek and vice versa. One of the main reasons is the drive via Warslow, Hartington, Winster, and Baslow, Bakewell, Longnor on the way back. Got to be one of the most scenic routes in the country.

I could go on forever... but this is a football forum...

OMG, yes, good old Joe Sparham.

Stood next door but one to us on a Saturday.

Somebody here must remember my parents Joe and Janet that sold fabric.

The Will Grigg version yes, but I thought it had been sung somewhere else about another player prior to that? Bristol Rovers seems to ring a bell, but clearly not as popular (nor did that version get released as a single lol)
