pretty sure if you do the maths it?ll tell you that shooting from distance gives you less chance of scoring than getting closer to the opposition?s goal, retaining possession and trying to work an opening. There was a whole thing about this recently in the Prem talking about how top coaches are encouraging their players to retain possession as opposed to belting it as soon as the goal enters their line of sight. Ironically the weekend after this talking point, a bunch of players scored screamers from distance lol. I think there?s a time and a place for it. When it opens up there?s nothing wrong with having a few distance efforts during a match but I?d suggest most end up being comfortably saved by the keeper or fly over the bar like Colclough?s effort did. I also didn?t see many opportunities to shoot from distance last night. You typically need a bit of space and they didn?t give us much within 30 yards of their goal because they sat their whole team behind the ball.
End of the day we still have 3 or 4 clear cut chances created from all of our position, so imagine that rather than being patient and creating those chances, one of our players in the build up shoots from distance - it might go in, but it probably won?t. Cook?s teams aren?t about crossing to big men and peppering the opposition with long shots, folks, they?re about picking teams apart with the ball and typically that goes well, but if our players can?t finish the sitters they?re given? 🤷🏼♂️
