During warmup shooting practice the power that the ball was hitting the back of the net was a delight to see,as on most occasions. So when in play why are we not shooting from outside the box.I have admitted on several occasions on here that the technical side of the game is not my area, but why with the pace and skill we now have in the team why are we not going straight down the middle and taking shots?

Yesterday, I cant recall many times it opened up for a shot that we didnt take - I can recall (and its included in the Sky highlights), from closer in, Dobra shooting from down the right, when it was screaming for a cross for Grigg.

The only reason I can think for not taking a shot is to retain possession. A shot means losing possession and leaving us open to a counter. But I agree we need to have a go from distance more often, possession is ok but more often than not it doesn't produce goals.

pretty sure if you do the maths it?ll tell you that shooting from distance gives you less chance of scoring than getting closer to the opposition?s goal, retaining possession and trying to work an opening. There was a whole thing about this recently in the Prem talking about how top coaches are encouraging their players to retain possession as opposed to belting it as soon as the goal enters their line of sight. Ironically the weekend after this talking point, a bunch of players scored screamers from distance lol. I think there?s a time and a place for it. When it opens up there?s nothing wrong with having a few distance efforts during a match but I?d suggest most end up being comfortably saved by the keeper or fly over the bar like Colclough?s effort did. I also didn?t see many opportunities to shoot from distance last night. You typically need a bit of space and they didn?t give us much within 30 yards of their goal because they sat their whole team behind the ball.

End of the day we still have 3 or 4 clear cut chances created from all of our position, so imagine that rather than being patient and creating those chances, one of our players in the build up shoots from distance - it might go in, but it probably won?t. Cook?s teams aren?t about crossing to big men and peppering the opposition with long shots, folks, they?re about picking teams apart with the ball and typically that goes well, but if our players can?t finish the sitters they?re given? 🤷🏼‍♂️

It was certainly a moot point last night with all those chances we created
Accentuate th Positive, eliminate the negative

Well said. I often don't understand why the players don't make the effort to keep it down when taking a shot like coco and dobbies shots. Grass cutters are harder to stop and if on target more often than not go in.

He's agreeing with you!

And yeah as an armchair critic I always find it bonkers that pro footballers struggle so much with getting over the ball... always seems such a schoolboy error

However, I have to imagine it's something about the time and space you're allowed at pro level making everyone have to rush and often making people flail at it a bit when not properly set
I just don't know what I'm supposed to be

Banks tried one 2nd half from the freekick but got his direction all wrong.

As I have often repeated, technically I am uneducated with the modern game but this type of explanation/clarification is how to get the points over, appreciated and understood.👍

Head and knee over the ball and it won't go into orbit.

For a player whose legs have gone, couldn't do it in the national league, and couldn't hack it in league two, he does tend to keep coming up with crucial goals...
