First noticed Dobra with what looked like holes in the backs of his socks last Saturday. Then I’ve noticed it more and more during the world cup. Is this some ‘new’ performance aide or injury prevention measure? Anyone know?

Apparently its supposed to ease pressure on the calf muscles, which are restricted by the tight socks and shin pads.

Not only holes in socks but many cut the actual foot part off the sock and wear the team socks over ankle socks that have non slip bits to prevent blisters etc from feet slipping around in their boots.

Why don’t they just wear boots that fit them?

Your feet still slide around in boots that fit.

A bit like marathon and ultra runners who wear calf sleeves. Compression socks squash the feet too much. Calf sleeves that are too tight restrict movement and can cause Achilles tendon strains. Speaking from experience.
That's possibly a reason they're cutting holes in the back of their socks.
