Rowley

I tend to agree with that. Rowley has ability in terms of skill, and is quite a tidy finisher, but he's still too easy to block out of a game, as he's lacking in both strength and pace. Maybe JR feels he can improve Joe in those areas, but I think he's got his work cut out. We'll see next season whether he was worth a contract or not.

My hope is that he’s signed him as a squad player and the reduced terms reflect this. Until a few weeks ago I thought he was as sure to go as someone like Boden. Bizarre really with all the midfielders we have signed

Gotta say I'm surprised, Rowley has been nothing short of a disappointment for yrs now, non of the last few managers have seen enuff to give him regular game time, I hope he now repays the faith JR has shown him, and he steps upto the plate, rather than just disappearing back into the background again.

Yet Rowley is still only 21. Tom Whelan’s 24 and can’t really be said to have done anything of note in the game until this season and last. There’s plenty of time for the lad to make a decent player. 90 minutes in a game doing what he was doing on Tuesday for 27 will be enough for me. Playing in the right position I can’t see why he can’t.

Not sure what "regular game time means" in terms of a 21 year old. He's made over 100 appearances, I believe, which is not a bad number at that age despite playing under various managers in various systems with different responsibilities. Even making team captain when playing in a defensive midfield role under MA.

Now, let's compare to the likes of Clarke who is a similar age. OK he's on the books of Villa but clubs haven't been queuing up to take him on loan and is it 3 appearances he's made for Yeovil. Then there is Martin Smith at 25 who has made fewer appearances by quite some way. JR has signed both these too. Our other home bred players like Rawson and Sharman are 19 coming up to 20 but, again, how many appearances have they made at NL level or above. I don't know how many appearances Maguire has made either but he's a couple of years older but I'm not sure he is up to 100 yet.

No, I think the "disappointment for years" comes from the very high promise he showed in an attacking central midfield role when introduced to the team by Caldwell which was just about the only success of that particular manager. If I remember correctly he dislocated his shoulder in the following pre-season and has been played in various roles since his return and only JR has returned him to something like his Caldwell role since.

And, don't forget, after just a handful of games Whelan has been declared by some as being the best central midfielder we've had for years!!!!

I like much of what I've seen so far from JR's teams but unlike the "rubbish" Hollis, the "not good enough" Maguire, the "donkey" Evans, the "can't wait to see the back of" Weston, Whelan hasn't been pre-judged and had the benefit in being introduced into a winning confident set-up.

Spot on DTP.

Rowley is now being played between the midfield and the strikers - which was always where his best performances came from.

Its a win-win for the club and the player.

The ones the last few managers did give regular game time to hardly pulled up any trees did they?! He’s a young kid that did well initially then has been trying to develop in the worst town team we’ve seen, under numerous crap managers chopping and changing constantly trying to play him in a way that didn’t suit him. He should be given the chance under a new younger progressive manager and we shall see what comes of him. Rowe obviously rates him and played him in a way that is probably better for him. Boreham felt he was enough of a threat to go out and chop him.

I've thought the same about Whelan. First few games he was on fire, full of energy and getting on the ball.
Just hope its a case of the 2 enforced breaks have meant he is searching for that sharpness again and it comes back today

Would like to see Martin Smith in midfield today for Mccourt, and back to the 2 up top in Asante and Dinnanga.

Other than that Taylor back for Whittle and rest picks itself.

Could we see Tyson on the bench today??

I didn’t watch the midweek game but I thought Whelan had good game against Wrexham, especially first half.

I reckon Weston will be let go. I just see Smith as his replacement in waiting.

I’d be surprised if Weston is here next season.

He’s reportedly a big earner and Rowe will be able to get a like for like, pretty much, on lower wages I’d imagine.

I can’t see Weston wanting to stay here on a reduced wage. The wage is most likely the reason he’s up here and if he’s accepting a reduced wage, he can probably get that down south and closer to home.

Yes and thats where I think the 10 day breaks have an effect , not just on Whelans performances but everyone, only to be expected really.

Be good to get through today and Tuesday with 6 points, no injuries and then rest a few at Aldershot in the FAT.

It’s only a win for the club if he comes good

That's right.
One thing all the numerous crap managers and their assistants had in common was that they all saw Joe's potential. We are now hearing opposition managers concur, so I think it's fair to accept that he has it.
I think JR hit on the core of the potential in his interview. 'Joe can dribble'. He can also see a pass. If he can add 'scores his share' to that then the potential is realised.
Get it on, bang the gong , get it on

Hhmmm

Not sure that’s a good idea

General question.

It would be simplistic and churlish to link the question to Rowley's injury, but for how long can we carry on without a strength and conditioning coach?

That's a question that will get an answer 🤔
Derbyshire is Derbyshire
Yorkshire is Yorkshire

Never the twain shall meet.

Has the American guy left already?

I’d say given the fact that training may be affected at any time or suspended the better the S&C coach the better the return after any suspension will be.

I’d imagine Rowe will be pretty on it though unlike a couple of his predecessors
