Which is kinda my whole point on this and the other threads, Rob.

I hope, I really, really hope the current crew come out of this being proven right. Because people's lives and livelihoods depend on it. And if they stand on the same stage receiving the same applause as the experts they've repeatedly told us they're listening to, then fair enough.

But you can't turn trust on and off. You can't spend years deceiving and denying and being duplicitous then expect folk to fall into an orderly line behind you just 'cos it's a time of crisis.

Leopards can't change their spots...

This crisis isn’t political, the virus isn’t a voter. I think for this issue politics has to be put to one side for a while.
A new hope.

Surely councils, landlords will be made give rebates on rates, and rents??

The Government have said that businesses in the retail and leisure sectors occupying premises with a rateable value up to £51K will no pay no business rates for 12 months. What about businesses occupying premises with a rateable value greater than £51K?

Also the rent, the freeholders have to be in a position to do a deal. Perhaps they have no wiggle-room?

The impact on the economy is massive and I think there will be further help announced next week.

A warning for everyone locally not to be complacent about this, my cousin was admitted to the Royal yesterday after being diagnosed with C-19. She's 61 with underlying conditions and I believe admitted because of this after 10 days self isolating. She well enough to be using Facebook this morning to pass on the news to friends & family.

Good news in that the Cousin has been allowed home

The repercussions from this will be felt for yrs, businesses will close, many many people will lose their jobs, house prices will fall, pensions, shares etc already falling,.. And nobody has a clue when or even if this will ever end, until there is no longer 1 case world wide the world is not safe,..

Will normal ever be Normal again??

Based on the last set of accounts, net profit divided by 12 with 80% paid with a maximum of £2500.

They would all moan then that net profit is reduced for tax purposes...and could they have more....

Should they repay the benefits of their entrepreneurial spirit from earlier years? When I worked for myself, 12 months money to live in my account as quickly as I could asthere are risks to self employment...

Thinking about the hospitality sector, there has to be more support.

The Government contributing 80% towards staff salaries up to £30K is one thing, but if a business has no income, how will it pay its other overheads, such as rent, etc?

It’s a challenge. Rent day next week (March 25th) and I knowwe have over £5m pounds to find. Revenue last night was less than £30k. And falling.

Staff wage contribution only applies after you have followed employment law to put job at risk so early indications are we have another 30 pays to cover before consultation ends. Then we have to pay it and claim it back which will mean using the loan system to cover it...

It’s a challenge. I am a tad busy. 8am and 6pm calls every day. And I am also under consultation. Happy days.

Landlords aren’t being too helpful...

And to add to our joys, under a very old law,in some leases if the current holder goes bust and can’t pay then the landlord can go back through previous holders of the lease and decide who to give the lease back to. We seem to be possibly getting 7 leases back... that would be empty hotels with no revenue in **** locations

Great times... oh and we can’t go into admin as we own the freeholds of some of our properties worth hundreds of millions - so we have access to finance if we can persuade banks to lend. But it means we get given a pile of sh 1 te to help a landlord...

The early support is encouraging but there is a long way to go to eliminate the pain.

They seem to have been told they can get the same as the unemployed. Which if their job has didappeared is what they are. If my job disappears do you think I should get more because I earn more than the average wage?

Thought not.

Meanwhile there's growing insight into the abrupt U-turn in government policy witnessed this week: https://www.mirror.c...-after-21732779

https://www.thetimes...-ever-spz6sc9vb

(To precis, the Dominic Cummins dictating Britain's response - despite public assurances it was experts behind decisions - advocated the 'herd immunity' approach whereby the more people became infected then recovered, the quicker the virus would burn out. Though at the projected cost of a hundred thousand lives. However a report last weekend revealed anything between a quarter and half a million could actually perish forcing a drastic re-think. I'd guess Johnson realised even a largely sycophantic media couldn't place a positive spin on that scenario.)

It was. Death is the only regular Labour commentator on here who doesn't represent the worst of Corbyn's Labour and has a level enough head to describe the broader, unbiased picture. The Labour Party needs people like him. He should join them.

Thought wrong then..

Understand the same circumstances, yes you should. You have a very narrow view of it. They are unemployed due to zero fault of their own. It is not down to incorrectly running their businesses, behaviour, poor performance or other; which is why you'd get the sack..so why aren't they being helped! That plumber you might require, that mechanic, electrician, beautician, chiropractor, etc; that ends up in a financial mess, THROUGH NO FAULT OF THEIR OWN,who possibly won't exist after this situation has passed; are you going to think the same then?
