I think we were kidding ourselves if we thought it had gone away.

What a contrast with the humble dignity of D Day vets taking part in this week's commemorations.

unfortunately the general rise in nationalist feeling and support for the likes of Tommy Robinson and Nigel Farage and their rhetoric was always going to lead to a rise in incidents like this

Probably quite ironic then that they disappear off into Europe with no limitations on travel within EU countries to act like dicks then....

Do you think the two are connected? I always assume they havent got the brains to take that stuff in and are just silly boys (of advancing age often!) who cant take their beer and think that being hard is being big - when they are with all their mates of course.

I do, the increased nationalism and support for the likes of our Tommeh have gone some way in legitimising xenophobic attitudes and incidents like this will be the result

There have always been drunken idiots following England but in the last few years this type of bother has been relatively scarce and not on the scale seen in Portugal last night

That said, there has also been an increase of idiocy on the far left as the scenes in London showed at the Trump demos, basically we are seeing massive polarisation in the country and the idiots on both sides feel empowered to act like dickheads in support of their cause!

Don't agree. I follow England all over (not gone to Portugal as i'm on a stag do tomorrow) and this stag do / Ryanair crew only crop up in Holland, Spain, Germany etc where it is cheap to get too and you can have a lads weekend away. None of this lot will be members of the ESTC and are on a cheap jolly with the lads and use the football as an excuse to do so. In a bar yesterday the group of Town fans I go with bought 30 bottles of Sagres for 15 euro, with the number of young lads who can't sup no wonder it turns into absolute chaos. It'll be the same all weekend.

Never heard anything re: Tommy Robinson or Farage chanted at England games, and a lot of the songs that are sang are the older ones that have been around for years so this definitely isn't something new. The behaviour last night is pathetic but definitely isn't something new, i'm not too fussed to be missing this Nations League jolly for that reason alone. You could argue the actions of the far left on the other side are just as bad, but that doesn't make great headlines!

I've seen it a number of times but they all disappear when you get off the beaten track to places like Russia, Estonia, Lithuania, etc where i've been and had a cracking time.

Roll on Bulgaria and Kosovo later this year, sure we won't be seeing those headline of people acting up over there.

I completely agree that they are there because it is a cheap jolly and won't be at the other places you mention, but I still believe my point stands that the current climate in this country is a factor in incidents like this, we haven't seen this level of idiocy even in the cheap to get to places for a while (Holland aside)

And I did mention the far left on the post above, they are just as bad

Drawing false equivalence between anti trump demonstrators and the EDL isn’t very helpful. There is polarisation for sure but you won’t find the far left as you put it, sullying our name at football matches in the name of patriotism.

The attitude is there. You don’t need to be drunk to sing‘ F**k the pope’ and ‘ I’d rather be a Paki than a Turk’. Christ you hear the former at the Proact on occasions and it’s sung by kids who wouldn’t even get a drink in pubs.

Fully agree.

Infact Gerald Batten, the UKIP Mk1 leader, has fully embraced a group calling itself the 'Football Lads Alliance', which is little more than a collection of right wing hooligans.

And though more politically savvy Farage, the UKIP Mk2 leader, has spoken of 'donning khaki and picking up a rifle' when discussing Brexit.

Whilst the likes of Bridge and Francois regularly reference conflict when doing the the same.

Chuck in Trump's ugly posturing, which has given licence to many racist outfits all over the World, and it's no surprise we're seeing a huge rise in nationalistic violence.

I agree, partially. Too many situations and platforms are encouraging the knuckle-draggers to voice their opinions in the only way they know how to.

Not to mention any left wing bully boys eh!

But, let's be quite honest - it's nowt to do with politics - it's brainless idiots with no respect for anybody or anything and who have never been taught how to behave.

if you read my posts you'd see I did mention left wing idiots an all

not saying it's to do with politics, but I am convinced that people holding more extreme views now feel enabled to display them more due to the current climate, this is reflected in crime stats an all

Probably the same as if we win. ost of those causing trouble won't be travel club members so won't be going to the game anyway.
