Just because you're (presumably) an atheist doesn't mean everyone else is.

He'll get 'criticised' by me because he seems to be able to handle the 'club' running bogus raffles etc etc, but is thrown into a moral tailspin by a book someone gave away that nobody has to read or be exposed to unless they choose to be.

Live and let live FFS.

I agree that him reconsidering his support for the club is a bit of an OTT reaction, but I also believe the club shouldn't be promoting theism in any way, shape of form regardless of whether they were handed free stuff.

FFS I wasn't presuming you were a christian you Chris Turner I was demonstrating your reasoning leads to the opposite conclusion you are coming to.
I also think you need to read Warner's whole comment instead of a bit of it, perhaps you could then see his meaning instead of coming up with one of your own that doesn't actually resemble the words.

Apologies for the Chris Turner I meant to call you a certain kind of root vegatable!

My bad.

I just thought that you writing "just because you're a Christian (presumably)" implied that you presumed I was a Christian.

I'm off to enrol at Chesterfield college to brush up on my English language comprehension.

Can't see a problem with it at all?
It's a free gift in the same way hotels have them.
Any pastoral care for any staff member is always a good thing no?

If you don't care then why do you care!?

You'll find Gideon bibles in hotel drawers all over the world. They give them away. They don't nail you to a cross and prop your eyes open and force you to read them.

It's not bibles per se, it the stuff inside them that denies science and promotes miracles. That is a concern we should all have. Children who are denied the knowledge that we are evolutionary primates living in a universe created by the laws of physics are being denied a human right. I think one day it will be a criminal offense to deny them this knowledge. By promoting a god, the club is promoting ignorance.

Don't be too self critical after all I believe Chesterfield is a football team so I really shouldn't be criticising other people's mumbo jumbo too much! :)

Its the same as giving out Mao's little red book, or the writings of one Adolf Hitler. Those ideologies were followed religiously too & as with all religious thinking it leads us to the gate of hell.

If the club choose to decline offers of free material from atheists, Sikhs, Buddhists or anyone else then I'm with you all the way.

I just didn't read it as a promotion tbh. It might have been an idea to accept them, but not publicise the fact, for the simple reason that now the club might be expected (perhaps rightly) that every offer of that nature be publicised and acknowledged in order to remain even handed.

There has been a lot of intelligent comment on this. And to qualify as intelligent it doesn't have to be on my side!

I just wish such intelligence and thought were evident in the running of the club. I don't want to be part of a Christian Club. I don't want to be part of an Atheist club or a Zoroastrian club. I want to be part of a football club. I am happy to let individuals believe or speak aloud what I believe to be nonsense or even dangerous. I'm happy to embrace difference. I want us to have black players and gay players, if we have a Kazakh left winger, an Iranian midfielder and a Colombian central defender I'll love it. If they cross themselves when taking a penalty or raise their eyes to Allah every time there's a corner what's that to me. If they can play football I'll love them. If they could play like Phil Bonnyman or Albert Holmes I'd be getting close to worship.

BUT religion and proselytisation can't have a place in the running of our club can they? We're not Derby Road Methodist Bucketbangers after all (even if that is the standard of football to which we're currently headed).

As a club that promotes equality I find it baffling that they accept a gift from a society that only allows male members and a book that is homophobic.

My view is that they should have been accepted politely as a gift and that it should have received zero publicity.
