Rubbish...more than decent lower league keeper as shown by his continued career in the lower leagues. Hounded by a few idiots on the Kop when he didnt do a lot wrong who then got all upset when he had the balls to, rightly, have a go back at them. We've had loads more keepers worse than him.

Roche is ok for league two, that's the best you can say about him.

Spelled wrong and a lot better keeper than many town fans give him credit for. Abbey was okay as well, certainly not a shocker. Astbury by a long stretch as far back as I can remember (85')

EDIT: Gayle was poor also.

You all remember Nathan Abbey strongly for one reason - his colour. There weren't many black keepers then. He wasn't good, but we've had worse keepers in my long lifetime.

Joe Anyon is a moderate keeper, who would be second-choice at best anywhere in the EFL.

Soderberg was either 4th or 5th keeper at Newcastle. He was 17 wasn't he? You shouldn't remember his performance at Oldham so much as the manager who did that to him. He was a youth international for Sweden, he's played in the top division in Sweden. He did play perhaps the worst game ever by a Chesterfield keeper ........ but you try performing to your best in those circumstances ........ having the guts to get out there deserves applause.

If you want to know if a keeper will make it, watch his hands by all means, but check out his feet. If he hasn't got quick feet forget it.

He was 20, nearly 21.

Agreed, he just upset some of our resident cry-babies by having the nerve to give them back some of the stick they gave him. Roche at that point had a very dodgy defence in front of him, which included inexperienced players who were prone to mistakes. Some of the 'experts' behind him on the kop, decided that all blame for any goals conceded was the fault of the keeper, no matter how many mistakes his defenders had made to present the opposition with chances. Roche was, and still is, a good lower league goalkeeper. We could certainly do with him right now.

Ron Tilsed ;) ** edit *** apologies didn't see brimington spireite post

On a purely self indulgent personal note ......Darren Randolph , rather have Ron Tilsed even in his mid late 60s

I thought Ben Williams (from Man Utd) was utter garbage for us, if I remember he HAD to play every game or Man Ure wouldn't pay his wages for us. Obviously once he left us he turned out to be a decent keeper.

Also on the Nathan Abbey front, I remember him for conceding 6 on his debut two of which he didn't even bother to dive for.

I think Anyon is average, not great but given how we defend we have to have a world beater to be in with a chance.

I would definately be looking for a real number one to compete with Anyon as I doubt Lee will be ready for XMAS and even he has stated he doesn't know if he'll get back to how he was before.

Nathan Abbey.. so bad was player of the year in his one season!

Mick Astbury, Greg Fleming, Ole Sodeburg, Mark Goldring, Mike Allison, Mark Gayle. There's six far worse keepers instantly!

I think Abbey really splits the fans, from talking to people, it seems that if you were in the Kop you loved him, if you were in the "main" stand you hated him.

Tthe team was dire that year so didn't he win by being the least bad ;-)

Barry Roche certainly gave me more confidence than Anyon does at the moment and his record of appearances over the past few seasons gives the impression that he is fine for making a few standin appearances as cover but not a lengthy run as a first choice keeper

In other words a decent standin for Tommy if he was injured for a spell but not at the expense of him for a lengthy period

How long Tommy is out for now will determine the period Anyon keeps the jersey at the moment

Nathan Abbey,Ronnie Tilsed & Mark Gayle don't even get close to the worst on a goals conceded per match average.

The rock bottom ten in the last 50 years being: 1.Olie Soderburg,2.Mike Astbury,3.Mark Goldring,4.Ben Williams,5.Malcolm Brunt,6.Torsten Stuckman,7.Brian Arblaster,8.Trevor Carson,9.Carl Muggleton,

10.John Osborne.

Before anyone asks the best were: 1.Alan Stevenson,2.Mike Pollitt,3.Billy Mercer,4.Alan Humphreys,joint 5.Mark Beasley/Steve Ogrizovic.

Not again

Why do people keep picking out Nathan Abbey who poor keeping s talked bout at Town?

He was a decent keeper, yes had a terrible first game but them so did many others.

I've been watching since 1989 and he wouldn't be anywhere near my worst 10 town keepers, never mind on the shortlist.

Nathan Abbey had a great kick on him and could place it not the worst by a long way always smiled as well

Only made one league appearance as a sub.

Didn't concede a goal,so actually makes him one of our better keepers.
