Now I know that the chances of that happening any time soon are remote, but it got me thinking of all the clubs that I have seen Town play against over the past 43 years that have had at least one season in the second tier of english football.
So I did a bit of research on t'internet this morning and the following clubs are teams that we have or used to play against on a quite regular basis and I would consider in the majority to be a similar size to Chesterfield (in my humble opinion):
(1) denotes at least 1 season in the old First Division
© denotes at least 1 season in the Conference
Bury, Cambridge ©, Carlisle (1) ©, Colchester ©, Crewe, Doncaster ©, Gillingham, Grimsby ©, Hereford ©, Luton (1) ©, Mansfield ©, Notts Count (1), Oldham (1), Orient, Oxford (1) ©, Peterborough, Plymouth, Port Vale, Rotherham, Scunthorpe, Shrewsbury ©, Southend, Stockport ©, Swindon (1), Tranmere ©, Walsall, Wimbledon (1), Wrexham © and York ©. And Burton and Yeovil can be added to the list, 2 clubs that after 4-5 seasons in the league have made it to the Championship. So thats a third of the Football League!
Like I said, I know that watching my beloved Chesterfield play in the Championship is a long way off, but you never know….

I think he was just going on his lifetime in watching us. We've been in the old second division before, but not for sixty plus years, hence most folk haven't seen us at that level.

You are not going to say you watched them when you were a lad are you?
Didn't CFC, once upon a time, probably in the 1940's, finish in the top six for six seasons on the trot in the old second division or am I dreaming?

You must be dreaming. No is the short answer. Moreover there were only four seasons played in the forties. We were then relegated in 1951. We did finish 4th once and sixth once in those seasons. And my Dad never let it go!

I had an uncle that kept reminding of a Cfc team that had Ray Middleton in goal which finished 4th in the old proper 2nd division which I think is the closest we have ever been to the now Premier League
We were relegated to the old 3rd division in 1952 ans we all know where we have been since then

I regularly think about a similar thing. But if I understand your keys right, there are quite a few errors in your research:
Bury spent at least one season in the Championship in recent years.
Cambridge did when I was collecting Panini stickers in the early 80s
Colchester have been in the Championship fairly recently for a year
Crewe were regulars there when Gradi was on top form
Donnie too
Peterborough too
PV too
Plymouth were nearly promoted to the top flight in the mid 80s
Rotherham are there now.
...don't understand your categorisation here, but agree most of these are similar in size to us

Perhaps I didn't make it clear, what I meant was that all the teams that I listed have spent at least one season in the 2nd tier of english football in the past 43 years of me watching Town.

Did Newport have a network of scouts combing the north and the Midlands seeking kids with "silver boots"?
