Well said

The days of taking a free kick in the wrong place and then not moving it as per instructed by the ref as a time wasting technique have long gone. (I have a vague recollection of Dave Blakey asking for a spanner? to tighten a stud once when town were struggling)

Dubious managers generally of teams of weaker standing are introducing more (sophisticated?) methods to earn! their team a point. We've had the ball boys farce introduced by Swansea (Hazard sent off) which culminated in Pboro giving us a master class Now we have people playing dead, 5 minutes into the game for disruption purposes and managers selecting their subs accordingly to gain maximum effect.
When these tactics are employed and affective it causes a cancer because the aggrieved team will adopt the same tactic at some stage.
As you rightly say the game will die, but what's to be done?

Bring physio on with stretcher to remove said player off the pitch and re-start immediately , if it,s genuine all well and good.

However if it's phoney the physio will soon get sick of it and rollock any play actors.

time keeping responsibility taken off the ref

Clock is stopped for all free kicks and injuries (clock continues when ball goes out of play for throw in, goal kick, corner - with ref still having ability to book people taking too long over these) - game ends dead on 90 minutes

If the length of time players stay down 'injured' no longer effects the time remaining then they'll start getting up quick!

They could have sent the other centre half off as well and we wouldn't have scored.

No, but at least then they might not have done. Possibly.
These go to eleven.

Wouldn't this just move the gamesmanship along to these situations - taking a few seconds extra at each throw in etc? Or even encourage the timewasting team to play for these?

The only way to truly eradicate it is to stop the clock whenever the ball is not in live play.

Wasn't David Robertson their boss then? He's at Sligo Rovers now- Cook's old side. Must be a joy to watch.

yep, he's spot on, unfortunately

After last nights loss he might be better advised at the moment to concentrate a bit more for Oldham than worry too much about us.

Spireites for the drop - Gerrard

Reporter: Matthew Chambers
Date online: 07 February 2017

ANTHONY Gerrard has responded sharply to comments from Chesterfield manager Gary Caldwell concerning Athletic's conduct, stating his belief that the Spireites are destined for the drop.

Gerrard, who turned 31 yesterday, was sent off after reacting angrily to a confrontation with Ian Evatt as the players made their way towards the changing rooms at half-time on Saturday. It means he serves a one-match ban for tonight's clash at MK Dons.

"People should be more professional than they were," said Caldwell after his side lost 1-0. "I don't like to see the way they acted as individuals at half-time and full-time."

While apologetic over his own conduct, Gerrard had his say on Chesterfield's ineffective style while also making the claim that bottles were thrown towards Athletic's players in the tunnel at the Proact Stadium.

"Maybe his own team could have done with not having that bit of professionalism and then, maybe they could have got the three points.

"It's not always about being pretty and passing it around the back four when 1-0 down with four minutes to go.

"They haven't got it and for me, personally, I think they will go down.

"When you don't test a goalkeeper for 45 minutes of a side that is a man down, it tells you all you need to know about the pretty passing football.

"They were devoid of ideas. Maybe that is down to the coaching, who knows?

"On a lack of professionalism, maybe I did lose my head a little bit. Sometimes things happen on a football field that aren't professional, like sticking your head on someone. If you are going to do that, please carry on. Because it means only one thing to me - I want to fight.

"Instead of running into your changing room and chucking bottles out of your changing room, if you are man enough to start sticking your head into people's faces, be man enough to stand there toe to toe."

Gerrard returns in time for Athletic's home clash with Coventry on Saturday and holds his hands up over the dismissal, which resulted in Ryan Flynn being sacrificed for Paul Green at half-time.

"I have apologised to the people I need to apologise to - the chairman, the fans and the players," he added.

"My silly mistake didn't end up costing us. In fact it brought us closer together and made us more tight-knit."

Sheridan was also left unimpressed with Caldwell's post-match comments on Athletic.

"That's something I would never, ever say," Sheridan said. "They just couldn't break down 10 men. There's the problem."

Just what you need pinning up in the dressing room....no team talk required

Really
So if its going to take "hours" to get 90 minutes football played I think we've underestimated the time wasting issue.

Regards to timed public transport being a problem I bet the chiefs at SKY are miffed having to adhere to it!!

Just remember they used to have a stat on sky about time the ball had been in play and it was surprisingly low, something like 60 minutes of the 90 on average - so playing 90 minutes after taking out all stoppages from the timing could take ages!

...then reduce the game time to something like 70 minutes (that the ball must be in play), I suppose.
