Just to let you know that most transfusions are given with the patient fully awake. Most of the blood supply is needed for medical reasons and not just for accidents and surgery. Each donation is split into 4 parts. Plasma, Red Blood Cell, Platelets and White Blood Cells. The White Cells are discarded and destroyed. So each donation given helps at least three people in need. Last year 2.5m units of Red Cells were used for transfusions. 1m units of plasma was used for transfusions. 15000 people lives depend on medicines made from plasma. I don't have the numbers for platelet transfusions, however I do know a man I work with is have platelets once a week because his bone marrow has shut down. This is keeping him alive until a suitable bone marrow donator is found. So how much good and lives saved can be achieved by doing so little has always astounded me. So to me a fear of needles is trivial. Upsetting and may make you feel ill for a short while I will admit, but short lived. Just think to yourself my personal discomfort for less than a hour 4 times a year will save at least 12 lives and it may ease your phobia. How many people can say that in their lifetime they have saved one life. A blood donor can say "I have saved at least 12 lives each and every year"

Health is the only true valid reason. I have no problem with those that can't donate its those that can but wont. Its the I Haven't the time, I cant be bothered, Let others do it, I am frightened of needles, too far to travel etc etc. That angers me. All poor reasons. Hey oh let the 5% of our population who donate continue to supply the blood for those that can but wont. That's right 5%. Its shameful. Its the society we live in now. I'm alright jack screw the rest.

You are a good person you save lives. That said we are not best buddies and all that. I will never agree with your politics as they are.

I would never expect anyone to agree or disagree with the way I vote, we live in a democracy and it’s personal choice. But the blood donation figures really shocked me, especially how few actually do it. That said it’s personal choice.

I go to the John Fretwell Centre near shirebrook also free to the transfusion service. Most places do however charge on a non profit basis just to cover the running costs of opening up

What makes you think you have to put yourself in harm’s way to need a blood transfusion?

Lots of things you could say that about. I have a problem with people who whinge about others who have made sacrifices to get on and then dont want to give 60% of what they earn to pay for those who cant be bothered - but that is just my opinion, dont expect others to agree.

I go to the official centre in Luton, of course as their premises it doesnt come free so no reason why people / businesses who give their premises for the purpose should do it for free either.... my guess is the equipment isnt free, the staff arent free, only the blood is free!

I would hazard a guess that there are many, many people doing good things to help others in society that you don't do because you haven't the time or can't be bothered. You do your bit for society by giving blood, others do different things. Don't judge someone as a bad person just because they don't give blood.
