Rivalry between ourselves and Mansfield? Well yeah, the fact the two towns are only fifteen or so miles apart probably means that'll always be the case.

But 'fierce'? Certainly from their side it is - infact their small band of followers develop a football version of Tourettes whenever our name is mentioned! However do our fans feel anywhere near as much animosity towards them? Really? Seriously?

Of course we want to keep them well and truly in their place, yet given they've spent most of the last twenty-odd years at least one division below us and we've repeatedly embarrassed them both on and off the pitch (Field Mill heroes Paul 'Dutch' Holland and Sam Clucas moving up to Town? Vastly superior facilities? A fanbase that dwarves theirs'?) I agree with 'Fitzy' that they're becoming little more than a novelty.

The banning orders our fans got would suggest it's plenty fierce enough.

so we have no fierce rivals then? How boring.

Many more against Cardiff, Tim, and we both know the local Plod will collar anyone that farts out of place when it suits them.

Oh I know. I know you like to play down the rivalry with Mansfield but it's been number #1 ever since I was able to associate myself with CFC and it's unlikely to ever change.

The bus (or walk if you were skint) from Netherthorpe up Middlecroft Road back to Inky used to be fun!

I remember the Cardiff day(s) vividly and those that got banning orders would most likely take it on the chin. It was proper mesters stuff that I think earned us a lot of respect from Cardiff and the bans were nothing more than an occupational hazard. Not that I condone it for one second, you understand.

Regarding the rivalry debate, the question that needs to be asked is that if Mansfield were to get promoted ( I know, humour me ) and Rotherham come down with Sheff Utd, Barnsley and Donny remaining in our division, which would be the first fixture you would look for?? Mine would be the Mansfield fixture at home followed by the away game.

For me, Mansfield will always be our main rivals.

The Cardiff stuff was barely football related in the end wasn't it? I was in Australia at the time but I distinctly remember hearing tales of local headcases turning out on the promise of a rumble. Wasn't the Ibis in town ransacked as Cardiff fans hid inside?

I remember reading a book about Cardiffs hooligans. It wasn't about the soul crew it was another book. Anyway one of the chapters was about the away fixture at Chesterfield when they got a surprise and all hell broke loose. A bit of a lively day similar to when Grimsby came to town in 1990.

Not sure about the Ibis getting ransacked with Cardiff hiding inside but I remember it started the night before with Cardiff in town and it being chaos all day on the Saturday. I'm sure you heard right about every Tom, Dick and Harry with either a screw loose or serious anger management issues becoming involved. I think it's perhaps fair to assume it started as football-related bother and it escalated from there. I'd imagine the police would just chuck it all under the football umbrella and ban from there.

Didn't a Cardiff fan get hospitalised after getting a twatting with a fire extinguisher?

There's one or two in this blokes top 20 I wouldn't have put in and one or 2 I'd definitely have put in, us and Stags is fiercer than some of them. Leeds v Man utd used to be hateful.

Interesting that the blokes fiercest rivalry in English football involves 2 Welsh teams!!!

can i extend this to scotland?

apart from the obvious celtic v rangers i give you auchinleck talbot v cumnock

I've got no idea, I suppose the gravity of the trouble depends on who's telling the tale. I just remember it being an extremely lively weekend, the worst I can recall really in almost 30 years of watching town.
