Thats right, I met Fred Goodwin years later when we were both in the RAF. Very sad to hear Bryn has passed away, we used to have quite a joust about football as he was a Leicester City Fan and If I remember he went out with a girl in the Top Stream who lived just outside Clay Cross on the A61 and who's dad worked at Ashton Containers, Danesmoor with my old man. By the way it's Dave Coombs if your memory has gone a bit cloudy

Hello. You are referring to his wife and life long love Lynn Botham, and dad Eric. They lived on Stretton Top, near me. Loads of people on here would have come into contact with Lynn's mum, who used to tour all the local schools as the Nit Nurse. Lynn passed away in her early 50's. Breast cancer.

Well Dave I certainly do remember you, I find it very sad hearing of old school pals who have left us and especially Bryn and Lynn, I can remember them going out with each other when I was at THGS. I left in the Lower Sixth to go out into the wide world eventually returning to Bristol, meeting my wife Liz ( now of 44 years) having 2 daughters ( one lives in USA and the other in Ecuador) 4 grandkids and still supporting Bristol City ( most of it a bit painful !!) My middle brother still lives on Ashover Road and do come up now and again for the weekend.Great chatting with you and my season hasnt ended yet as watching for Towns scores in play-offs. All the best

He was nigh on unplayable

Said the same after the game about Flint. His command of pretty much the back line (he played centrally in a back three) was immens and he was a constant threat in our box too.

BTW if anyone didn't see his hat trick against Walsall last week, check it out on line, his 2nd (I think) was a volleyed rabona!!! Finished the season on 15 goals!!

The amazing thing about Flinty was that when he first came from Swindon ( and before that Alfreton) he looked like a camel in midfield and really didnt look like he would cut the mustard, this year has been a transformation and we voted him Player of The Year, in the opposite direction we signed Adam El-Abd from Brighton and he has been on loan at Bury nearly all season and we gave him a 3 year contract ! As Greavsie said 'It's a funny old game !'

Really great to see Town in the play offs. As a Bristol City supporter living in Somerset, I spent my teenage years from 15-19 living at Old Tupton and remember watching Town a few times although my old man whisked me off to Hillsborough as his view was' we have moved this far so might as well go and support a First Division Team. Remember going up to watch Town play at Doncaster when Donnie played at Belle Vue and stupidly I went in my firms van with signwriting on the side with the firms name. Later that week I was told I had been seen in Donnie and got the sack !! It has been a roller coaster for us this last year and proof if you get the right manager and players, anything can happen but believe me 18 months ago it looked really grim. I think Paul Cook can really do it for you. If anyone on this forum knows any town supporter/mum/dad who were around Tupton Hall Grammar in the mid 60's would love to hear from them, they will remember me, I had the Bristol Accent !! Anyway go for it, would love the Spireites ( have to get used to that name as always called them Town )to join us in the Championship but dont worry if you dont, next year could see you do it. All the best.

I went to Tupton Hall the first year it was a comprehensive - but was shipped there from Clay Cross secondary. I left when I was 15 - early 70's. My dad used to keep the Royal Oak on the roundabout. Fred Rice was headmaster.
Thanks for the good wishes - we'll have our fingers well and truly crossed

You have to think its down to goals scored per wages paid being deemed not a good enough return for the club. And I doubt the lad will be looking for anything other than an increase in pay, not a reduction.

Radders, The Royal Oak was where I learned to drink. Used to sell Home Ales I think, can remember Bitter @ 1/10d a pint and Mild @ 1/8d. Drank in the back snug which I dont think is there anymore. My mate went out with the Landlord's daughter about 1968 time and I did a bit of courting with Julie Stokes, the policeman's daughter near The Woodthorpe and took her in the Oak and a bit of kiss and cuddle in the bus stop on Ashover Road. Happy Days

I know the 'financial backing' thing comes up a lot this season but dont forget, Stephen Lansdown has been with us for years including when we were last in the Championship and 90 mins from the Premiership in the play offs. We then had the few years under McInnes and then SOD where we thought we were in danger of going into League 2 ! Throwing money didnt work and our most expensive signing Kieran Agard hasnt exactly been banging them in and cost 750k. Know Clutton very well as I lived in Paulton, I had a trial with City when I was 12 but didnt sign any forms !! Still one thing, my season ticket as a Senior next year has cost me only £325 so am wary of going into the highest league as could price me out. Towns result is always one I look for on a Saturday so come on , come up with us , you will be made very welcome as our supporters on our forum overwhelmingly voted for PNE and your good selves to come up with us

Dave, I know Paulton well! I lived (appropriately) at Cook's Hill in Clutton for a couple of years (1960-62)before moving to Bristol (Bishopston) - and spent more time at Eastville than I did at Ashton Gate - as my girlfriend was a kennel maid, and I got in to both dog-track and Rovers games for free! Was John Atyeo still at City when you were there - and didn't he get a couple of England caps? Your supporters forum vote is dead in the water now - but hopefully one of your chosen two will make it! Anyone except Swindon, eh?

Yes Big John was there when I had my trial, a City Hero. My mate had a greyhound he raced at Eastville and the wife and I spent many a happy Saturday evening in the Blue Room with a meal and Tote betting. Yes big John got 6 caps for England and I still see Jantzen Derrick to talk to who played on the wing when John was Centre Forward. The main vote to come up with us is PNE or Town ( not Sheff Utd as they stuffed us down here a few months ago and Definitely not the cheats from Swindle Town. For me for obvious reasons it has to be Town and I really hope you get to Wembley and get the win.

Hi, I lived in Old Tupton and went to THGS from1966 to 1973, my sister from 1962 to 1969. We lived on the corner of Coupe Lane and Ashover Road - my Mum still lives there. I started going to watch the Spieites in 1965/66, with the proceeds of my paper round earnings, catching the Chesterfield Corporation bus from the Royal Oak and getting off at John Turners in Town. Of course Cliff Gladwin the Derbyshire and England cricketer and his family lived on Ashover Road - his house is now called Cricketers House and I think he had a sports shop on Cheapside in Chesterfield. How sad that today's stars don't come from within the local area. I too still wear mod fashion and wish I had my original parka which disintegrated sometime in the 1990's. No scooter for me back then just a Carlton racer and the bus.

Sorry to butt in but I went to tupton hall in the 90s and went to school with and also played football for years with Bryn and Lynn's lad David. My old man became good friends with Bryn for a number of years, a nice bloke always jovial and good company. The same in regards to Lynn, two good people and very sad they both passed away earlier than they should have.

No problem 'butting' in nice to know of someone else who knew Bryn and Lynn.
