Like last season, I'm told we're already over budget before a ball's been kicked competitively.

i don't see how we can be over budget, we may have spent more than originally intended but the budget must have been adjusted accordingly!

The size of the budget is a calculated business decision; the board looks at all factors in setting the original budget and amending it as necessary. If they have decided things are going well, STs are up, the team is looking good etc, it would be rational to spend a little more if they think it will increase our chances of success, crowd sizes, turnover and so on.

Agreed, that B****Y ball he often tried was ridiculous. I think he'll benefit more this season by having 2 midfielders in front of him that will come and collect the ball.

That was half the problem with last season.

There was no one in that midfield who were showing for the ball, prompting Hird to, 99% unsuccessfully make something happen with the Hollywood ball.

As you've said Lindo, with Morsy and Ryan predominantly coming to pick the ball up, along with Roberts and Jay, the simple ball will be on more often than not.

Not concerned about midfield at all this season, and with or with Cresswell, I think we're pretty sound at the back.

Doyle's slow start is a bit of a concern, and leaves me questioning just where he's gonna fit into the side. With only Rico and Armand as other serious options, I'd like to see another forward come in.

...it may not break his bank, but I wouldn't want us squandering £100k on this player, who let's face was released by Rotherham for nowt at the end of the previous season. If he was going to be up for L1 why did they let him go? Ok, he had a good season last, but also played for Rotherham in L2 for a number of season when they weren't exactly pulling up any trees.

He was always a consistent performer for The Millers though, and the few Rotherham fans I'll admit to knowing were disappointed to see him shown the door.

I think a lot of the negative judgments on here of RC, are based on one Friday night horror show, where Jack destroyed him.

Let's face it though, any back 4 in L1/L2 would have been destroyed that night.

He's a decent player.......

Whether he's 100k worth of decent player though.....??

These things are always relative, I think. If we can get someone better/just as good for the same (or less), then go with that option. If we think he could be the difference between, say, third and fourth place, get it spent. I don't know enough about who else might be available as an alternative to comment with any confidence - guess that is the same for most?

No but it's still a lot of money on a 'decent' player. Chucking 100k at Cresswell isn't the only way to show ambition, there may be a much more effective way of spending that amount of cash. Yes we've all heard of Cresswell but cooper cost us nowt in transfer fees, the players are out there.
Over the years we've spent more money on worse players and less money on better players but none of that convinces me Cresswell is worth 100k transfer fee.
If you do what you always do, you'll get what you always get.

Cresswell is the type of player who would compliment Cooper and could also slot in alongside Hird. I think given his performances last year he is probably worth around the 100K mark. That said, I think we’ll be looking elsewhere now as I can’t see us being willing to meet Southend’s transfer fee.
If only....

The individual that told me about last summer's overspend wasn't wrong then & he'll not be wrong on this occasion either.

Mike,

Id imagine that the Roberts signing will have stretched the budget and the interview with CT highlighted special praise for DA so you'd assume Allen has allowed for a little extra. Do you know if the potential Cresswell signing is included in the current budget?

From what I was told last Tuesday, we are over budget & DA will be providing additional funding for PC, therefore I ASSUME that Cresswell coming here will be over & above.

You really have to say that DA, CT and Co are really backing PC and his team.

Massive clear out on both the playing side and the back room staff over the summer, and some quality signings all over the park.

This season could well have a legacy at this football club for the next decade, one way or another!

We may well have over spent compared to the original budget, but they will probably try and account for this as putting through the compensation paid to the previous backroom team and the compensation paid to clubs for the recruitment of the new backroom staff as exceptional items & therefore deem them outside of the original anticipate budget.

Remember, we've 'spent' very little of the actual budget so far with the rest being 'committed to'. However, it would only take a reasonably 'high earner' to leave to bring the projected spend back down considerably though.

If Cresswell goes to Fleetwood then fair enough. I can't believe there aren't other cb's available for the price we're willing to pay. Besides, let's not forget we won the league with makeshift central defenders like Mattis, Robertson and even Griffiths filling in.

Did that happen? I remember Harrow Borough away and that's it.

Anyway, yeah, surely there are other options knocking about.
