I will be dissappointed if we pay over the odds for a L2 standard CB. No way is he worth over £100k. There has got to be better out there for that sort of money. The only way I would have approached it would be cash plus a player. Time to move on.

Got to agree, I like Cresswell and his no nonsense style of play but £100k transfer fee? Plus I would guess at least £2.5k/ week? That's a lot of money to spend from a tight budget on a 'decent' player.

Probably the only offer on the table now and if he wants to come up North he has little choice

any contract there would be for 2 years plus, and he'd still be a long way away from where he wants to be. His best option would be to turn it down. Put a lot of pressure on sarfend to come back to us and, worse case scenario, he has to stick it out for a year before moving back up and picking up a decent signing on fee from a club that has saved paying a transfer fee. Doubt it would come to that though as he could sign a pre contract in Jan which would force SU to get anything they could for him.

This. If it were a player proven at a higher level, i might have a different opinion.

You seem very certain that he is L1 standard. I'm not. If we find a defence that is getting us promotion then doing summat that would affect morale would be disastrous.

why do you think it would affect morale,do you believe that brown /hird are sufficient?

Wasn't it Cook who said he didn't do protracted contract negotiations? Wouldn't this come under that? I wouldn't be disappointed if we went with Hird and Brown with Hird and Cooper our first choice starting pair. Its looked solid enough so far

I'm saying that doing what Beelzebub suggests next February is not a good idea, and that Cresswell is probably not L1 standard.
None of the experts on here have been willing to take a punt on gauging Brown's ability yet. I've only seen him for 45 minutes and he looked as good as 'owt else out there to me. On Hird, I've always been an admirer. He's a very good footballer and he'll not let us down, although him and Cooper together arn't ideal. To be blunt, if anybody needs to buck his ideas up, it's Cooper. At the end of last season he was having a torrid time, making fundamental errors such as leaving back passes short. This time round, I noticed PC giving him a right rollocking over the Forest goal.

Talk is cheap guys, I'll bet things are still rumbling on, it may run to the close of the transfer deadline. So we could be starting the season with Cresswell arriving late. With the hmrc thing at southend I think a game of poker is in place.

well one things for sure hird certainly has to cut out the cross field long ball hollywoods like he did in his first season, perhaps he should just win it and give it to somebody who can play,i think his lofty reputation and championship football cv got the better of him ,a stroll in the park it certainly was not.

Like last season, I'm told we're already over budget before a ball's been kicked competitively.

Agreed, that B****Y ball he often tried was ridiculous. I think he'll benefit more this season by having 2 midfielders in front of him that will come and collect the ball.
