But still worth a shot, at what wages we paid, it was probably an acceptable risk, and the lad has a year at a league club on his cv.
of course the dream of finding a diamond is worth chasing....
am I am going mad but didn't Nozzer didn't play for a league club until 23, what would we give for unearthing another one of him.....

That's just it isn't it, same with Dagenham too.

Slight difference between signing someone from Alfreton one level below the conference, and Chalfont St Peter though, from the Spartan South Midlands League, Premier Division.

Very true, and that might indicate how far down the pyramid we have to go to find ones that don't cost six figues to begin with!

Surely not that much given Notts County assessed the value of one of the top strikers in League Two at only £50K?

It is a fair point though, going non-league for players is always going to be a bit of a punt and if that involves any club at our level shelling out actual cash in transfer fees then I think most would (and do) consider just waiting for out of contract league players to become available to make up the numbers instead.

you didn't take that bid seriously did you?

They hadn't got £5 never mind £50k - if we'd accepted their bid they'd have spoiled their trousers! It was a PR exercise to send messages to their supporters and deliberately set so low that there was no chance of it being accepted. If they'd quadrupled it we'd have had a decision to make but they knew what they were doing.

Of course I realise it wasn't a serious bid, I was being flippant

Speaking of their financial situation and the goings on with Munto and the like, I was expecting to hear of some penalty for dodgy financial shenannigans that they had been involved in by now. Are we to assume that, apart from getting themselves firmly in the red, that all was above board with their dealings last year?

the footballing authorities are notoriously slow and reluctant to take action. No club has suffered a dawn inquisition since Mr Bean visited saltergate - too many clubs with too much to hide! Notts thoroughly deserve to have the kitchen sink thrown at them but I doubt if any action will now be taken.

Talking of inaction - Luton seem to have got away scott free from their pitch invasion and attacks on the visiting players in last season's playoffs. Disgraceful. By far the worst pitch invasion in decades yet no charges have been raised. I've never seen players attacked before. Some draconian punishment is surely warranted. The conference have a history of expelling clubs for far less serious misdemeanours (ask salisbury or northwich) - surely that would be appropriate here. West Ham and Millwall had five figure fines for their fracas last season and that was a lot lower down the richter scale than luton's shenanigans.

Not forgetting the costs we incurred to house and feed him during the week (spent most of his weekends at home)

I hear the strict diet regimes (compared to eating what you want, when you want) were an issue for him (as well as controlling his temper, laterly ;-P)

Great. Wouldn't it be great to see him given a chance for England. He seems to have become more of a goal scorer of late as well as
a player that the best of defenders struggle to handle. It might have been an option for the last World Cup Qualifying
and Disappointing, but alas perhaps too late now - but if Zamoora is an option, shouldn't Davies also be one, at least for the Euros Qualifying ?

It's a scandal that Heskey has got so many caps and Davies none, still good enough for a call up

Absolute Scandal ! much though Heskey has been an effective target man for England. Though really at that level you've got to
have some liklihood of hitting the old barn door! A few others of late come to mind in regard to that scandal - Carlton Cole !

IF ONLY: - Davies probably would have put that winning chance against the USA away , meaning not playing Germany in the 2nd round meaning delaying embarrassment until the Quarters ! or maybe even the Semi's, meaning a happier summer for the English people!

'coulduh shoulduh woulduh', like our dear CFC again today!

davies playing for bolton doesn't help him. With capello now turning to youth like people suggested davies's chance of a cap is as dry as the desert.
