he spent what he was allowed to spend by his chairman. what manager wouldnt? best team we ever had and best coach in frank barlow. the only thing the team lacked to get us to what is now called championship was a decent centre forward. Ernie was past his best and walker couldnt hit a barn door from 5 yards

Failed 3 promotion runs on the trot, and appointing his ssistant Frank Barlow, selling Keith Walwyn cost us promotion the third time. How many fans can say they didn't enjoy those days.If Dave Allen had been in charge then we would have gone up and then into the top league with his backing. Was Ian gaunt the chairman in those days?

Ian Gaunt was the chairman at the time.As I can remember for quite a few years before the board was regarded as a closed shop.
Certain local 'money men' at the time who wanted to put money into the club were not allowed to join the board of directors because
of this policy. As I posted on an earlier thread IMO Arthur Cox spent money we did not have in a failed attempt to join what is
now the Championship. He then left to join Newcastle leaving Frank Barlow to try and pick up the pieces.
Frank told me,in the supporters eyes, 'If we go up it will be Arthurs team if we dont it will be mine',
unfortunately for him and the club Frank never spoke a truer word
