I'm sure the ECB would call the two division championship a success given England's relative success in Test cricket since its creation. How direct the two are linked is open to debate.

I think you look back a little with rose tinted spectacles (as we can all be guilty of). There was plenty of rubbish, aimless & negative county cricket 'back in the day' and Derbyshire only stayed at Queens Park for a couple of years whilst falling out with those in Derby.

The real shame of that was that CBC had the opportunity to allow Derbyshire to make the move permanently but messed it up. Derby is much improved but how good could Queens Park have become with serious investment? I imagine it a little like Worcester is now.

Isn't that the nub of the problem for DCCC - the ground at Derby is probably the coldest, bleakest in the country and so the setting doesn't pull in the crowds. So what do you do - spend the money developing Queens Park or Derby? Heart says Queens Park, head says Derby if it were ever to happen as that is where the commercial opps are.

Also worth remembering that Derbyshire are often referred to as a small rural county yet it has a larger population than Somerset, Glos, Leicestershire, Worcs, Durham and Northants - some of whom have enjoyed more success and all have better facilities and attract larger crowds than we do.

Derby is a lot better now than it was and to be honest with our summers a lot of cricket grounds are bleak most of the time!! I dont think many counties pull in decent crowds outside of big ODI\T20 games, watching county championship games isnt doable for the vast majority.

Could they ever have developed Queens Park to a decent venue that wouldnt have met opposition from folk moaning about loss of parts of the park etc who arent bothered about cricket? I remember going to watch us in a semi final at Bristol that we lost in the final over i think but that side then broke up due to internal politics...thats what did for us more than on the field stuff. To many agendas and we ended up with a side of crap kolpak players that we've only just started to recover from. If anything i suspect promotion last season came far quicker than we were probably ready for.

The ground at Derby is pretty pleasant now - much better that when I first went as a kid in the early 90s. I'd be more depressed watching cricket in a test venue with 3,000 in than Derby with 1,000 personally. I think the club have it about right with Queens Park - with limited days of cricket two T20s and a game v Yorkshire in a week keep it 'special'.

I bet there'll be a good number in tonight too for this warm up game.

Anyone notice the collapse of Derbyshire-esque proportions at Taunton yesterday?

6 wickets for 0 runs in the end....after a day where apparently the Aussie attack looked rather toothless.

Gleefully take the result tonight. However reading sporting life's report it sounds like Johnny wotsisname wrote it.
