It must be one of the best places in the known universe to watch cricket on a glorious summer evening whilst supping cold Pedigree, I'm sure us raucous Alfreton parents were well received

Anyhow also well done to Tibshelf school u13s who have today won the Bolsover area finals and therefore represent the area at the County finals.
Really enjoying this seasons u12's and u13's cricket which my lad is involved in. One lad once said this age is the best to enjoy junior cricket before the seniors.

I can see the attraction as a spectator with the bar, little balcony and plenty of watching room....as a player its just starting to get a bit tired and if they arent careful it could go downhill. The club has had big issues the last few years with players galore leaving and imported players\paid players not helping matters to the point that on the eve of this season they folded their first team and are carrying on with what was their 2nd and 3rds in the lower half of the Derbyshire County League. In my time at Clay Cross we never really got on and beating them was always pleasurable as it really seemed to wind them up. They always seemed to give off the impression as well that coming to play at Clay Cross was beneath them and they hated it...something we used to build up as well to our advantage. From a personal point of view there are a number of other grounds in the league i would put above Meadows....there was talk a while back it would succumb to a dual carridgeway...not sure what happened to that!!
As for junior cricket i cant talk about the early age groups as i didnt start playing cricket til i was 15. I grew up a footballer in my dads footsteps but by the time i was 14/15 my best mate was a cricketer and a very good bat so i spent a lot of time playing cricket at his house and bowling trying to get him out. I decided to give it a go and only played a couple of school games before going straight into senior cricket.

No doubt folk will still lay into the earlier batting and yes some of it wasnt great with the likes of Trott and Root not going on from starts and Bell getting out at a key time but surely they also set it up a bit by not leaving Buttler to come in with 15/20 overs left. Think folk are expecting the ball disappearing from ball one these days and in England, especially on a cloudy day at Trent Bridge, with two new balls it aint going to happen. People rattling on about NZ getting 359 the other day...they were 36-1 i think after 10. That 359 was partly down to some woeful bowling as well as two batsmen getting set and going big.

I'm still yet to bat on a Saturday in a DCCL game since....28th July 2012!! Was padded up last week along with another lad but the skipper sent him in at 10 as we scrambled home off the last ball.
Is it fair to say 'Rog' divides opinions? I've had very mild mannered people use very colourful language when hearing his name.

It probably gets off to a bad start when all umpires chat to him as if a long lost nephew! When were at Alfreton the other week someone came to watch from Selston and noting who we were due to be playing last weekend said 'make sure you beat 'em cos of that c***!'.
Suffice to say it didn't happen!

Problem there is he's always played at ashover and the same umpires do the same places most weeks so get to know folk. The umpire that gave me both lbw's on Saturday used to open the bowling with me many years ago at the Cross!!

A good all round performance from Alex Hughes who scored 59 not out and took 3 wkts as Essex finished well short of Derbyshires 321 for 5
