Magoffin's match figures for Sussex v Somerset are pretty tidy.

31 for 12

At least it looks like Somerset are due to struggle just like us.

12 for 31....dont get all Aussie on us please!! ;)

See Derbyshire managed a win last night....beat Stainsby Hall in a T20 charity game celebrating Stainsby Halls 150th anniversary year!

Was pleased not to be available for selection yesterday. Today, with the sun out, I'm less pleased.

I don't think Cook has showered himself in glory with some of the decisions as captain in this game.

I don't get the not enforcing the follow-on thing. In some cases yes but here, very odd. It won't ultimately matter unless it rains big time tomorrow but we could have won it already.

I agree it would have been finished by now, some strange decisions like at the end Root still having his pads on and not ready to bowl. The commentators have picked a few things up today which were a bit school boy errorish

What were they playing at with the two sub fielders on? It's something that really annoys me. If a player goes off for a 'rest' or any other reason other than injury you ought to be fielding with ten men.

I believe Compton is genuinely injured (and about to be dropped), but as the ICC have altered the 'runners' rule they should do the same with sub fielders.
"Do you think I'm here for your amusement" & good riddance to bad rubbish

Is he? I was out and only saw half an hour of their innings. Root to open, KP back in the middle order.

I can't see what England would gain from moving Root to open. Why put such a big ask on a young pair of shoulders when there is no need to.

He's a better player than Compton, a natural opener, and seven years younger.

Yeah but look at the runs he is getting where he is batting, so why change it. Barstow will be dropped for KP which is wrong

Cos he is an opener but has been doing a job in the middle order. To be fair he was thrown in on debut in India and coped, thrown into the ODI arena and coped including a couple of match winning knocks and scored his maiden hundred at a time in the game when it could easily have gone a bit belly up. He has also scored big runs opening for Yorkshire the last few years. It all suggests he can cope with the pressure and to be honest we are going nowhere playing Compton currently, woefully out of form and i'm still not convinced he is good enough despite his couple of hundreds especially as at times he scores to slow putting pressure on others.

Cook
Root
Trott
KP
Bell

Thats a decent top 5 to me and the number 6 slot i think could go to Bairstow, Butler or Morgan.

KP has to come back in so if you're not dropping Compton to open with Root or dropping Bairstow who are you dropping?

In a few years time I agree but do you not think that Root and his performances have got us in the winning positions in the past games he has played in ?
Why break a winning formula.
I dont think Compton deserves his place but to me the middle order has been weak and Root and Bairstow has put a stop to that, for me KP wouldnt automatically come straight back in for the first game of the Ashes.
Carberry would be my choice as opener.

Think its a bit early to be saying Bairstow is the answer....that was his first test 50 on Saturday wasnt it however if Compton is to be dropped, which i think should happen, then Root is the one to replace him at the top of the order. Not convinced by Carberry and he hasnt been anywhere near the squad since getting in a while back although i know he was ill.

Root is an opener by trade for Yorkshire and got thrown into the middle order due to injuries when it was initially a toss up between him and Compton to open up in India. Compton got some runs in a warm up game and got the nod only for injury to lead to Root getting thrown in to bat at 6!! He hasnt shown anything as yet to suggest he would struggle opening as he has just taken everything in his stride to date and importantly is an opening bat for his county. Round peg in round hole to take a saying used on here a lot!! ;)

I saw Bairstow get a proper working over by the Windies at Trent Bridge last year i think it was and still has a lot to prove before we can say the spot is his. Few knocking about that could do that job and i personally would love to see Jos Butler given a go at some point and just hope he doesnt fall foul of being labelled a one day\T20 specialist. I wouldnt completely discount Morgan either as yet.

He needs permission from the ECB to go as i think he is still on a Central Contract so they obviously dont mind. I think they probably see him now as a T20\ODI player so playing decent T20 stuff in India is good for him. Be a shame for him to not feature in tests again though.
