has got me thinking

over the years, how much have our best players cost us?

has money being spent on a player always guaranteed success?

I'll limit this to strikers for now as that is what most of the talk is about so going through the last 20 years or so lets see how much we have paid for strikers (not counting loans) and whether they were any good....

Craig Davies - Free - Success
Jack Lester - Free - Success
Jamie Ward - 100k? - Success, made money on him
Caleb Folan - Free - Success (eventually)
Martin Gritton - 40k - Failure
Jason Lee - 250k - Failure
Tony Lormor - free - success
Steve Norris - can't remember! - success
Andy Morris - 500 quid - success
David Reeves - swap deal - success
Jon Howard - free - hit and miss
Steve Wilkinson - 150k - failure (blame Duncan mind!)
Jamie Burt - free - ultimately a failure, so much potential mind
David Lancaster - 70k - was ok
Colin Larkin - free - failure
Paul Shaw - free - failure
Glynn Hurst - free - success

from that lot it would seem that paying money does not guarantee you success and that in the lower leagues it is more about finding quality players for nowt

perhaps we should be more hung up on who Sheridan can find and bring in rather than how much they cost, as at this level a transfer fee is no guarantee of success, some players who command a fee will do well others won't, some players on a free will do well, others won't - it's about getting the right player, not about how much they cost

We paid Halifax £35k for Stevie Norris, I remember at the time thinking how cheap he was.

 It's obvious we are looking for the right players for our club but also at the best deal.Hopefully it will all come together soon.

I was playing on Championship Manager and came across Jamie Cade.

Also another one, Mark Debolla, I think he was my first 'favourite player', don't ask why. I can't remember which game it was, but Mark had gone a stupid amount of games without a goal, and he basically did everything but put it in the back of the net.. Then in the last minute he poked it in, the crowd went MENTAL for him.. And the offside flag was up

Yeah I remember when he finally did score one against Wednesday too I think......

We were already about 3 goals behind and it meant nothing but he still went wild

I remember Tcham N'Toya equalizing for us against Wednesday, doing the flips, then it being ruled out -_-

Was my first time watching us play the pigs.

Out of interest, can anyone remember who scored in the 2-2 draw at their place that year?

IMO Blathers is the best defender we have had for a decade...............but...again its just MY opinion....I dont think JS would like that sort of CB.

The Bosman ruling changed dramatically the whole system regarding Free Transfers. A Free Transfer now could be a highly rated player who is out of contract (Craig Davies) and not just some other club’s cast off’s.

I personally think the loan market will be the key difference between success and failure this season for us.
If only....
