As ever it'll come down to money, and the ribbon-cutter will be the one who'll charge least for a personal appearance. That's probably the Duke.

I won't charge anything.
To be honest if someone wants paying for doing it then they shouldn't be doing it as they would be doing it for the wrong reason

I understand that Banks if probably the greatest 'living' former Spireite and therefore an obvious choice, but looking at the from another angle, how about John Motson?

"So cruelly denied' he wrote, after being knocked out of the FA Cup Semi....

Should get the Beeb here for that too.
I'm embarrassed by the actions of those who run my club.

Our President used to be a regular on the Pop side. As a teenager the chauffer dropped him off near by for so he could walk to the ground as a fan rather than as the Marquess of Hartington. I kid you not.

Also helped the club out financially in the post DB era

By the way, please write out a thousand times:

"I must not call Town Chessie...i must not call Town Chessie...i must not..."

Ask Webster to ban it as a swearword lol - it's banned on the Chesterfield Mad site, if you type it in it comes up on your post as stars

Cutting the ribbon? No particularly strong feelings - wouldn't even mind if it was a raffle where the winner cut the ribbon.

I just want to get in there n pick me seats.
Don't worry what people think, they don't do it very often.

Depends on whether we want t give someone the honour of opening the stadium or gain the max publicity?

If it is to give someone the honour/reward service to the club then one from:

Albert Holmes
Jamie Hewitt
Ernie Moss
John Duncan & Kev Randall

If publicity:

Gordon Banks
Duke of Devonshire

Or maybe the later could use his very good contacts with an HRH (Good friends with HRH Prince Charles) what could be better to have the new stadium officially opened by the future King!

Wrong

Banks has no connections with town. He's a dee dah who played for us for half a season half a century ago. No way will he attract much publicity - he is not news. He was trotted out when the dee-dah clubs were vying to be hosts for the proposed world cup bid and was hardly front page news was he. He has a PR job at Stoke City - bet you didn't know that either!

If you are going for front page news go for the latest teeny pop star or page 3 model. If you are going for a serious, respected person with Town connections it has to be the Duke. In 100 years time we want visitors to look at the plaque and know who opened the ground and not say - who? A lot of you on here seem to have old fashioned Trotskyist political agendas but stuff that - the Duke's the man. His family has always been very supportive and if he used to stand on the terraces as a lad as Pete says -who better.

Post #38 pretty much answers that one.

And if it makes me an old fashioned Trot' to prefer someone that's actually achieved something to someone that was simply born in the right bed, then a Trot' i'm happy to be.

It's quite clear to me that whoever is President should do the job. How have you got your information that the Duke hasn't done anything for the club?. I suppose your views would be even more extreme if the Duke had been a Duchess.
Mrs Hubbard would be a good shout for me if the Duke can't do it.
Get it on, bang the gong , get it on

There you go again - labelling my views as "extreme".

And all 'cos i'd prefer a World Cup winner to someone who's only achievement is falling into the highest Council Tax bracket.

But then if you wanna list all the things ol' Peregrine's done for the Club, i'm more than happy to be educated.

Other than allegedly attending games, of course.

By the way Dave, if Mrs Hubbard can't make the gig my missus says she's prepared to stand in.

After all, i guess she pretty much fulfils the same criteria as Mrs 'H'.

Sepp Blatter - President of FIFA - who else?

OK, then it has to be the Duke of Devonshire. Nothing wrong with a toff whose been to Eton and Oxbridge. At least he knows how to push his peas onto the back of a fork and won't embarrass us at the opening dinner. Guaranteed to maintain standards and would never be seen squirting ketchup on his burger.

Actually my deah, the correct etiquette for eating peas is to use ones fork as a scoop don't you know.

If criteria of apearances is coming into it and a servant of the club why not Jamie Hewitt ?

I mean he has done more for CFC than Gordon Banks :(
