CHESTERFIELD have still not revealed the identity of the man who will replace Lee Richardson as manager.
Sheffield Wednesday's 1991 League Cup hero John Sheridan is hot favourite to be named with tomorrow being the likely day. Should the former Irish International get the nod, one of his first tasks would be to make a decision on Richardson's assistant Scott Sellars.

The pair were teammates at Leeds United in the mid 1980s so Sheridan will know what his former midfield colleague has to offer. Sellars, aged 43, is out of contract at the end of this month so will be hoping that his tenure at Saltergate will be extended.

Mark Crossley, the former Nottingham Forest keeper, could also be involved in the coaching department if Sheridan is the successful candidate.

Chesterfield's backroom team includes one-time Blade Shane Nicholson, the fitness coach, Spireites' 1997 FA Cup semi-final heroes Jamie Hewitt (physio) and Mark Jules, who runs the centre of excellence, while ex-Miller Dave Bentley is youth manager.

Elsewhere in League Two, Port Vale are about to reveal their new boss, with Micky Adams the hot tip. Darlington's new manager is Colin Todd, and newly-promoted Burton Albion named former Blade Paul Peschisolido as boss.

The addition of Dave Allen to the Chesterfield boardroom has seen the Spireites' odds for success shorten this week.

Ahead of the ex-Owls chairman's £6 million investment, most bookmakers had the Saltergate side at 16-1 for the League Two title next season, but the best value you'll find now is 14-1, with Stan James offering a measly 9-1.

John Sheridan and Colin Calderwood remain the favourites to battle it out for the vacant manager's job, with the final decision most likely to be revealed on Friday.

Former Hillsborough star Sheridan looks to be the best bet to succeed Lee Richardson.

The ex-Republic of Ireland player was in charge at Oldham Athletic until being sacked in March.

If his appointment is confirmed, he could well be accompanied by Mark Crossley, the one-time Nottingham Forest keeper who had a loan spell at Hillsborough in 2006-07 and was on Sheridan's coaching staff at Boundary Park.

Crossley, who will be 40 later this month, could also double up as back-up to Tommy Lee, having played for the Latics as recently as April. He played 24 times in the season that's just finished.

New majority shareholder Allen has indicated that he wants to see attractive, attacking football at his new club.

Tommy Wright was thought to be Sheridan's choice as No 2 with Crossley coming in as reserve keeper/goalkeeping coach.

It seems to me Sheridan may have agreed to a compromise and will have Sellars as his assistant

Polish keeper Karol Wojtyla went on to manage quite a big team.

BTW I found an article by David James where he makes a very obvious point. In any squad outfield players will outnumber goalkeeprs by more than 10 : 1 so for every 100 successful managers you'd expect less than 10 to be keepers.

Maybe I should write for the Sheffield Star since what's in the 2nd article is basically what I posted on this board.

All over the place journos seem to be getting lazier, in the London papers Twitter changes seem to make the news and instead of interviewing people they take quotes from Facebook groups and other messageboards. Its just so lazy.
